Late last year, Soul Food actress Nicole Ari Parker and her husband, Boris Kodjoe, revealed that their eldest child, 3 ½ year-old Sophie Tei-Naaki Lee suffers from Spina Bifida, a developmental birth defect which results in an incompletely formed spinal cord. The couple is currently reaching out to family and friends in hope of raising funds for a special surgical study that might help in finding a cure for their “miracle child."

In only eight days, the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation has already collected $10,000 of the $35,000 needed to build a playground at Beyond Shelter, a low-income Los Angeles housing project with no recreational facilities for the 175 children who reside there. Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, who announced the project last week, are thrilled with the response, sharing that they have received $5 donations from 1,825 text messages coming from 48 states.
