cradle culture: the cradle chimes in (passing it on...)

Here at The Cradle, many of us are moms, living in the world of pregnancy and babies. Here's our space for sharing our own personal experiences.

"how did you celebrate your last days as a couple before your baby arrived?"

e saw tons of movies because people warned us that we'd never have time to see a film again after our son was born.  We were so freaked out, we practically lived at the movie theatre. That may explain my gaining 60 pounds: popcorn, soda, and candy was a big part of my diet!  Note: We still see plenty of movies.  I don't know what all the fuss was about. It's called Date Night.

was sick the entire 9 1/2 months of being pregnant (really sick), so we didn't do a thing. But we celebrated right when Lily was born because immediately I felt fantastic. So we did a reverse - four days after I had my daughter, the three of us went shoe shopping (for me) and out to dinner. It was a celebration just to be out of the house!

e were in MAJOR nesting mode right before the baby came, but at 5 months prego we took a babymoon (without our toddler) to the Bahamas. Lots of pampering and needed quality time. It’s nice to have tanned skin when carrying around a big belly!

y son Max just turned 17 yesterday, yet the details surrounding his birth are still fresh in my mind. I had just finished my rotation in Endocrinology at Good Samaritan Hospital on Friday.  I was 3 days from my due date!  Saturday, Bruce and I decided to see a movie, Postcards from the Edge starring Carrie Fisher (ugh that dates us), and took in dinner at our favorite restaurant. The next day (Sunday) we washed the cars, read the LA Times, and while doing the Sunday crossword puzzle, taking in a little sun, my water broke... contractions got us to the hospital a few hours later, and 28 hours of labor, and a crash C-Section, my 7pound 3 ounce beautiful boy was born.

e started a new business... brilliant move. Actually, we weren't going to be sleeping for a few weeks/months/years, so why not throw something else into the mix?

y son, Emmett, came two months early, so to be honest we did not do anything too special because we did not plan on the early arrival of him. With the birth of my daughter, Liv, it was much more calculated but by that time it was all about Emmett, making sure he would welcome Liv into his life. So we went shopping the night before for "big brother" toys to shower him with.

ong walks, dinner with as many friends as possible, movies, and laughter. And making conscious (and joking) statements about how this was the “last” dinner alone, or this is the last time at this restaurant alone.

Our babymoon was celebrated in Hawaii as part of our 3rd Anniversary – Kona’s Four Season – perfect!

- Christopher Gavigan, HCHW, Member of The Cradle Advisory Board

e had been on bedrest for 16 weeks before our first baby was born, so once I was able to get up (at week 37), we went on a big hike together.  The fresh air did us good, the conversation was  incredibly meaningful, and the best part was... my water broke the next day!
