Eco-Friendly Baby Carriers
I’m interested in baby wearing, but I want to find a carrier that is organic or natural. Do they even make “green” carriers?
My son Corbin was a very easy baby – as long as someone was always holding him. Didn’t have to be me per se, but the Master-Who-Would-Not-Be-Put-Down just wanted some good warm cuddles at all times. So baby wearing became part of our household without much thought; it was simply the best answer for all of us. Research has also shown that wearing one’s baby promotes bonding, improves development, reduces crying, and keeps you and your baby happy – as long as you’ve got the fit right. There are so many options available for baby carriers and yes, even some organic ones. Just like shoes though, different carriers feel better on different bodies, so take your time trying on a few styles in order to find the one that works best for you.

We love the
Ergobaby Organics carrier by Karin Frost. It comes in Chocolate with Caramel lining and a Caramel Infant Insert, or Forest Green with Moss lining and a Moss Infant Insert. Matching backpacks are available, too.
New Native Organic Cotton Baby Carrier is a bit more of a structured choice and comes in a wide range of colors and prints from Dalmatian to Jungle Mingle. They also offer a mini sling for younger siblings and their stuffed “babies.”
DIDYMOS are traditional baby wrapping cloths that allow for up to six different carrying positions. I love their Indio Blue and White pattern.
The Ellaroo Mei Hip Baby Carrier (organic cotton) is a versatile and stylish option that can be worn on front or back – and it looks so cool!
In addition to choosing the right option for baby carrying, consider the following safety precautions before your first venture with baby on board:
- Make sure your carrier is right for your baby’s age; some are made for older children and not safe for infants.
- Practice before you begin - paying close attention to what you would do if you were to trip and fall, since this is how most baby-wearing accidents happen.
- When you do start wearing your baby, support her with your arm until you are confident.
- Make sure your baby carrier is properly adjusted. For both the health of your body and the safety of your body, it should feel very comfortable.
- Swap positions frequently so that your body does not get out of balance.
- Be extra cautious when bending to pick things up or making sudden movements. If you have a dog, and the dog gets in a fight and you rush in to help... you can imagine the rest, so just trust me on this one.
- Do not cook with baby on board.
I know some of this advice sounds obvious, but if you’re a new mom with new-mommy-brain, you may not think of everything ahead of time. Better to be safe than sorry...
