Should I use an enema before I go to the hospital to deliver? I am nervous about having a bowel movement during birth.

Barbara Dehn, RN MS NP:

I’m so glad that you asked. Almost everyone worries about this delicate situation and yet they’re too embarrassed to ask. We don’t usually recommend enemas as they can be very uncomfortable, and even if you use one, it doesn’t guarantee that you will get everything “cleaned out.” The truth is that when moms are working hard in labor and pushing with contractions, sometimes some stool will also get pushed out. Before you get concerned, remember that you will be dealing with trained professionals who have seen everything imaginable and really don’t have any issues about all manner of body fluids. And these wonderful nurses, midwives, and physicians will make sure to clean up after any inadvertent bowel movements during the pushing phase to help ensure that the baby is not exposed to any stool.
