What’s the deal with coloring my hair during pregnancy? Should I stay away from it, or are some hair dyes safe?

Barbara Dehn, RN MS NP:

Looking good is important when your body is changing in ways that you can’t control! And coloring your hair can help you feel like yourself as the rest of your body grows and grows and grows. Most OB/GYNs and midwives agree that hair dyes are probably safe in pregnancy and do not pose a risk to the baby. But to be extra safe, we recommend that you decrease all potentially harmful environmental exposures in the first trimester when the baby’s organs are developing.

Many moms use hair mascara or a rinse that washes out during this time. Others try highlights that minimize the amount of time the dyes come into contact with the scalp. Many moms feel safer using these products (instead of a full-blown hair dye) in the second and third trimester.

Regardless of what you do about coloring, you’ll probably notice that your hair will be thicker and have a nicer sheen now from the hormonal changes you’re experiencing.
