Is it okay to relax my hair during my pregnancy?

Barbara Dehn, RN MS NP:

You may have noticed that you’ll hear different answers to this question depending upon whom you ask. The reason is there aren’t any good studies and we have to rely on data from animals to give pregnant women guidelines.

Our skin and scalp absorb chemicals, so it’s important to read the labels and check with your own OB provider or dermatologist for specific guidelines if you’re not sure.

Regarding hair relaxers, perms, and coloring, it’s generally accepted that these are probably safe after the 1st trimester. The scalp can absorb chemicals; so to be safe, it’s best to wait until after 12 weeks for these treatments.
