Are there some face washes, creams, or acne treatments that I need to steer clear of when I’m pregnant? I’m nervous about what I’m putting on my skin!

Barbara Dehn, RN MS NP:

Never doubt the power of hormones to wreak havoc on your skin. Acne can worsen in pregnancy, and you may even find it on your neck and back! You’re so smart to be concerned because your skin absorbs medications just as if you swallowed a pill. Because there are so many different creams, it’s best to check with your OB/GYN or dermatologist about specifics.

In general though, it’s best to avoid or limit the use of products that contain any of the following:

  • Retin-A. It contains Vitamin A, which is harmful in large doses.

  • Salicylic acids. These are similar to aspirin, which may cause bleeding.

  • Hydrocortisone. This is a steroid that is considered safe in small quantities, but large amounts or daily use may increase risks to the baby.

Over the counter creams and lotions that are generally considered safe contain:

  • Benzoyl Peroxide.

Be sure to get clear guidelines with your health practitioner on what’s safe and what to steer clear of.
