When babies are in a breech position, it means that they are sitting down and that their little heads are facing up. Delivering a baby in this position is a bit more risky for the baby. An external version means that the doctor will try to use their hands on the OUTSIDE of your tummy to try and turn the baby into a head down position. This is usually done in the labor and delivery area of the hospital, so that mom and baby can be monitored. Many doctors give the woman an oral medication to prevent contractions, and most have one or more assistants there.
It usually lasts 5-10 minutes, and may be uncomfortable. The mom and baby are then monitored afterwards. This is considered a safe option to help prevent a C-section. Good luck.
