HOW YOUR BABY IS GROWING: FIRST MONTH
Your baby is busy during this first month! Although you won't be able to hear it, the heart will start beating around the 24th or 25th day after conception. As you finish this first month, your little peanut will actually look more like a tadpole.
What's going on this month:
The fertilized egg, or blastocyst, finds a home in your uterus as it implants itself in the endometrial lining.
The growing fetus gets cozy - and stays protected - in the amniotic sac.
The placenta begins to form.
The umbilical cord begins to grow, providing oxygen and nutrition to the growing fetus.
The following features begin to develop:
Tiny arm and leg buds sprout.
The brain and spinal cord begin to form.
The heart and lungs begin developing.
The head and trunk start to form.
The eyes begin to develop.
Nerve development begins.
HOW YOUR BABY IS GROWING: SECOND MONTH
Development continues at a rapid pace. By the end of this month, your little tadpole will actually start to look like a little infant - albeit a 1-inch, less-than-1-oz. infant (about the size of a grape)!
What's going on this month:
All major organs and body systems are developing (including brain, lungs, liver, kidneys).
Your baby's bones start to appear.
Your baby’s joints are working, letting him/her move around in the uterus.
The following features begin to develop:
His/her ankles, wrists, fingers, and toes begin to form (but the fingers and toes are webbed at this point).
The inner ear starts to develop.
The heart valves begin to form.
The sex organs begin development (although ultrasounds can’t detect the gender this early on).
The intestines start to develop outside of the baby’s body (in the umbilical cord, actually). Don't worry, they'll migrate inside later.
The eye-lids and tongue start to form.
HOW YOUR BABY IS GROWING: THIRD MONTH
By the end of this month, your baby is completely formed and will be moving around in your uterus! (Of course, you probably won't feel anything since the fetus is only about 3 to 4 inches long and a little more than 1 oz.)
The umbilical cord (which feeds your baby and carries waste away) will be fully formed and you’ll be able to hear the heartbeat with a fetoscope.
What's going on this month:
All major organs and body systems are functioning (brain, lungs, liver, kidneys), and will continue to mature.
Fingers aren’t webbed anymore and soft fingernails (and toenails) start to appear.
Skin is almost transparent.
The ears, which start their development very low on the head, start to move up to the side of the head.
The following features begin to develop:
Bones and muscles begin to grow.
Baby teeth (20 buds) begin to develop.
Hair may start to form. (The amount of hair each baby is born with will vary.)
Facial features are forming and starting to become more refined; you would be able to decipher the eyes, chin, nose and forehead.
