Ways to Help after Baby Arrives
A Little Help for Your Friends
by Chelsea P. Gladden
very plant you’ve owned in the last two years has died, and you haven’t seen a diaper since they were cloth… so how could you possibly offer assistance to a new Mom and Dad? Between cooking, cleaning, and buying more diapers, there are a variety of ways you can be involved during those first few weeks after baby comes home.
Bring Food/Cook
Adjusting to no sleep can leave new parents wondering which end is up when changing diapers, so figuring out what to eat, let alone actually making it, can be a task way beyond grasp. Cooking a variety of meals for them, or even ordering take-out, is extremely helpful. Go for dishes that will last a few days, such as lasagna, grilled chicken, or beans and rice.
If cooking in the kitchen isn’t your strong suit, consider hiring a local food delivery service that will prepare meals for the new parents. Or, simply go online to a grocer and have a week’s worth of healthy food delivered, such as apples, bananas, and nuts (items that will stock their cabinets, and are easy to eat between feedings and diaper changes).
Do Housework
Although virtually housebound, most new parents feel like they have no time to take care of menial chores. Doing their laundry or getting the dishes out of the sink is a nice way to lend a helping hand.
If you’re not inspired to break out the vacuum cleaner, you can still help their home sparkle by splurging on a cleaning crew that’ll come in and do their dirty work.
Let the New Mom Shower
Who knew something so simple could mean so much? Finding the time to fit in a shower can be one of a new Mom's biggest challenges. Just holding, feeding, or playing with the baby while the new Mom has a few moments to herself under hot water will go a long, long way. You can even make it extra special and show up with some bath and body products just for her.
Take the Night Shift
In the beginning, sleep deprivation can be one of the hardest adjustments for new parents. Offering to be on baby duty during the night shift will give them some well-needed sleep.
Or you could present them with a gift certificate for a baby nurse, or doula. According to Dona International, postpartum doulas help families "make a smooth transition into new family dynamics." And with a new Mom recovering from the physical demands of labor, help around the house will be welcome gift.
