Baby Food Recipes

Compiled by The Cradle Staff

Starting on solids? Make is a smooth transition (so to speak) with homemade baby food. By making your own culinary concoctions, you’ll cut back on both spending at the grocery store and on adding to the earth’s landfills (no glass jars!).

But best of all – it’s easier than you’d think! Here are some ‘real-mom’ palate pleasing recipes that will get your baby on right the track to eating well...

*We highly recommend the Beaba Babycook for easy cooking in the kitchen.

“Voila! A yummy fruit smoothie that can be eaten from a spoon or frozen to an ice pop she can teethe on.”

Dierdre, Bayville, NY

Yummy Veggie Puree

Ingredients
3-4 leaves of kale, trim off stems and roughly chop the leaves (you can add more if you like)

1 1/2 cups of diced sweet potatoes
1/4 cup onions
1/4 cup water, or no sodium chicken broth

Directions
1. Put all ingredients in a steamer - steam until tender.
2. Add everything into a blender. Take the water from the bottom of the steamer (lots of nutrients!) and add to the vegetables.
3. Puree to desired consistency.

“You can make it a nice, smooth puree for your 6 month old, or slightly chunkier for your older infants.”

Minjae B., San Francisco, CA

Pumpkin Puree Baby Food

Ingredients
1 sugar pumpkin
Water
Cinnamon and Nutmeg (optional - sprinkle into the cooking water or when you puree/mash)

Directions
1. Halve the pumpkin and de-seed.
2. Place halves face down in a baking pan with approx 1-2 inches of water.
3. Bake between 375-425 degrees for approximately 40 minutes to one hour (skin should be 'puckery' and/or wrinkled and should feel soft when pressed).
4. Scrape out the pumpkin 'meat' and then mash or puree as needed for your baby.
