A question about car seats | 6/5/09 4:02 PM
I was out to dinner with my cousin and we were talking about all the things you need for a baby. She said that you have to have a base for the carrier and you can get in trouble if you get pulled over. I thought you can just buckle the carrier into the seat. Can anyone tell me for sure if they are necessary in a legal sense?

I've never heard anything like that. I don't know if it varies by state. But I know not all carseats offer the base attachment. I have bases on all the seats I've owned. But I have a hard time believing that they would require something that not all types of carseats have. Do some research I guess.

My car seat came with instructions on how to install the car seat without the base. If it were illegal to have the seat installed without the base, it would be kind of silly for them to include that information. Perhaps your cousin was working with an older model car seat that was not tested for use without the base.

My advice is to find a car seat inspection center near you (can be found at http://www.usa.safekids.org/), and have them check your base-less installation. In my area, these centers tend to be close to hospitals/police stations/fire stations and so I can't imagine them endorsing a set-up in your vehicle that would cause a problem if pulled over.

Yeah, that seems like maybe it's a city ordinance or something??? OR maybe she just didn't have it properly installed and that's why she had the ticket??

I just wanted to add, that it may not get you a ticket not to have a base but they sure are a time saver! We have been watching a three month old baby boy of our friends the past few weekends and they have a carseat with-out a base. Having to buckle it in every time was beginning to be a real head-ache. Since we already bought a carseat (with a base) for our little one I had my husband install the base and we have been using ours when he comes to play. It has saved alot of time buckling and unbuckling. With our system the back of the actual carseat has a latch that releases it from the base and you are good to go!

If you have the base in your car and it's not in correctly you can get introuble for that because the baby is NOT safe! with some cars like mine I have bucket seats so I can't use the base correctly so I just strap mine in with the seat belt! My aunt is a cop and I asked her and she said that you can't get introuble either way unless the baby isn't safe!
