does anyone have experience with acid reflux in their newborns? I am starting to suspect that my son has it but it's Sunday night and the Dr.'s office is closed. I'm going to call tomorrow but wanted to know more now.

I can totally tell you everything you would ever need to know about acid reflux in newborns. My son had it REALLY bad for about 6 months. We even had to have him put on Zantac for it. He literally vomited half of everything he ate, which made him even more irritable. He also had terrible gas bubbles that wouldn't come up. I tried everything I could think of, such as elevating his head for half an hour after eating, having him sleep in his carseat, Mylicon drops, burping him every 5 minutes during feedings, etc...It really was absolutely miserable. My doctor even had him checked for a disorder called Pyloric Stynosis, which is a failure of the top of the stomach closing properly. Luckily, that came back just fine. The Zantac was the only thing that seemed to give him any relief, but that still didn't completely fix the problem. He just had to grow out of it. What triggered our concern was that he would vomit like a geyser after every feeding or he would be screaming in pain. My doctor thought it was just regular baby spit up at first, until she actually saw him vomit across the office one day. That's when she finally agreed that he had "the gurd", which is another name for acid reflux. I hope you get some good news from your doctor and that they can do something to help out! Just make sure you keep lots of bibs, burp cloths, and changes of clothes on hand!

Thanks for the info and support. It seems like he's always hungry and he has had bad gas bubbles that " wouldn't come up" I am trying the elevations and shorter feedings. The only thing that is keeping me from calling the dr. tonight is the fact that I know he's growing and gaining weight. Funny you should mention the bibs and clothes---My mother in law went nuts whie she was visiting she bought 20 bibs for me

When it got warmer out, my son lived in his diaper and a bib all the time. I nursed, so his clothes were constantly stained. When we went out, I would keep 4-5 bibs with me, 3 changes of clothes, and at least 2 burp cloths. I even had a spare stash of things in the car!

Just a question...Are you nursing or bottle feeding? If you're nursing, the baby could be allergic to something you're eating. If you're bottle feeding, the baby could be having a reaction to the formula.

As far as the "feeling hungry" issue. A lot of the time, the baby isn't really hungry. It's usually because they have a gas bubble and eating makes it feel better for a little while. When my son was about 4 months old, I left him with a friend for the day with enough breast milk to last him the entire day. She gave him the milk whenever he would cry and of course he threw it all up...By the time my hubby got there, he had eaten and thrown up over 32oz of milk!

Something that sort of helped my son with his gas issue was to lay him across my lap on his tummy. Supporting his head, I would gently bounce my knees, just enough to work out the bubble. If he was super fussy, I would lay him on his tummy in my arms and fly him back and forth. The movement would almost always calm him down. Sometimes, I would have to fly him for half an hour or more, but it would eventually work. Sometimes, I had to let him suck on one of my fingers at the same time.

Just a few more thoughts. I hope something works out for you!

My son made the most awful face when they put him on Zantac, so I buckled and added cereal to his formula to thicken it....stopped it almost right away.

I know this is an old post but I just saw you asked about Prevacid and wanted to reply. My 2 1/2 month old girl is currently on Prevacid and has been for about four weeks now. It seems to help somewhat with her constant crying and lack of sleep, but the spit up still happens. Though I don't think she has it as bad as your son. But we haven't had any problems with Prevacid, to answer your question. Good luck to you, I hope he grows out of it soon, if nothing else. It's so hard to see the little ones in pain!
