Hi! Does anyone know if a bassinet is necessary for the safety/protection of a newborn or is it optional so that the infant is able to sleep in the same room as you?
Thanks for your input - I'm a first time mommy and don't know if we need one or not!

I didnt have one with my first daughter and I have been lookin at one for this one but not sure that I will get it! With this one we are thinking of just using or gettign a pack and play and leaving her in that in our room while she is new born but who knows, You can do what you want and are comfortable with!! Congrats on your baby and being a first time mom as well

They are not absolutely necessary but it is nice to have one. I bought one with my first baby and it really helped. If you can find one that is level with your bed it's even better, then when the baby cries you don't have to run to another room or any of that. Just set up the bassinet next to the bed, get a few bottles ready and some diapers and you're set for the night. It's so much more convenient!

I actually got a co sleeper. This is my first one as well and had to decide what I was going to do. I decided with the bedside co sleeper, mostly because I'll also be breast feeding and your baby literally sleeps right next to you. So there's no up and running around for any of it for a while. You may feel better if you have your little one close to you as well for the first little bit. I keep getting told how common it is for new moms to go and check to make sure baby is still breathing. :0)

Good luck!

I don't think they are necessary. We're just having the baby sleep in a pack n play in our room at first. We planned on getting one anyways for whenever we travel, so it can double as a way to keep her close to us for the first few weeks.

IMO, they are not necessary. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I still have my old bassinet but I kinda doubt I'll use it much, if at all. Both of my boys ended up sleeping right next to me and I pretty much used the bassinet as a changing station during the night. I am a very light sleeper so whenever they moved or made any noise I was awake and ready to take care of them. I really liked having them so close to me too...
