Bottle sterilization - what works best for you? | 2/8/08 12:55 AM
I will admit that I'm thinking waaay ahead, since my baby isn't even due for another 6 weeks. But I'm trying to get all my gear now, so am wondering if I need a bottle sterilizer. What works best for you? Do you use a sterilizer? Microwave? Dishwasher? I have some Born Free bottles and some Adiri bottles (I figured I'd try one and then have the other for backup if he doesn't like those.)

I think you're due about two weeks ahead of me. ^_^ As for the bottles, I don't know myself, but my friends and relatives have always depended on the dishwasher. If you are a little paranoid, though, there's nothing wrong with getting a sterilizer to ease your mind. I think we'll have enough to worry about as it is!

My mother just boiled the bottles, nipples, teethers etc on the stove when my sisters and I were infants. She showed my sister how to do it and it worked great for her. She did it like this for like the first 6 months and then just put them in the dishwasher. It is what I plan on doing for my children.

The only thing you have to becareful of is to make sure your water doesnt boil out because then your bottles will melt. Once the water is boiling she turns the pot off and lets them sit for 5-10 minutes. Then takes them out using tongs and inverts them into one of those bottle trees.

No need to buy a sterlizer. Although if you need a new dishwasher, they have some with the sterilizing feature now.

Good Luck.

We haven't used bottles since my daughter was like 3 weeks old and the very rare situation that I need to pump...but when we used them we found these bags that medela makes called quick clean micro steam bags. You just put your plastic bottles , nipples, pacifiers and pump accessories in them add a few ounces of water and pop them in the microwave for 2-3 min. They are sooo convenient and eliminate 99.9% of bacteria and germs. You can use each bag up to 20 times and they come 5 to a pack for like 5 or 10 dollars I think!

I boiled my bottles the before I used them the first time. After that, I used the dishwasher. It worked well for us. The only issue we ever had was that the nipples tended to turn over and hold water. When that happened, I would boil them again. We didn't need bottles very often because I nursed, but the dishwasher was usually very helpful when I needed it.
