My baby is almost 2 weeks old and I have a really painful crack in my left breast. Anyone have good tips about healing and reducing the pain when feeding until it heals?

Oh! I have the perfect suggestion. Lansinoh Cream. It was given to me in the hospital and it is perfectly safe to use while nursing. There are a lot of creams that you need to remove before you can nurse the baby again. I know you can find it at Wal-Mart. It is in a purple box and it's a little pricey, but it is completely worth it. It really is a product that I think ALL nursing moms should keep on hand.

I had the same thing happen with my son! I found it helpful to pump on the side with the cracked nipple for a few days and feed him more frequently on the side that was okay. It helped my breast heal faster. Also, get some !00% Lanolin (Medela brand sells it and also Lasinoh) and apply it to your nipples regularly. Good Luck! Keep with the nursing, I thought the first few weeks were hard and I was really sore, but it gets a lot better and it's pretty amazing :-)

I have been using that cream but it dosen't seem to help really on that side at least. the cream works for the other side. I guess that it feels like its never going to heal because it hurts so bad. I don't have a pum but I will try hand expression to help stay off that side a little more. thanks for the feed back!

I had the same problems with my son when he was born. They gave me lanolin ointment to put on them and it was amazing. Then I would alternate one feeding would be breast and then the next would be bottle until I was healed and it worked for me.

Congrats on the baby. When I had this problem I was told to use a tea bag. You boil it and then place it on your nipple. It is very soothing and helps it heal faster. Also when you have used a tea bag you can put the old ones in the fridge and use them the next day. The cool tea bags also feel very good. The cream everyone is talking about never worked for me either. Try putting the baby is different positions as well on that side. This can relieve some pain as well. Good luck, just remember it will all work out eventually and try to stick to it, if that is what you really want to do.

Congratulations on the new baby!

Here's a link to an article that may be helpful as well:

Also, the following is a recommendation by lactation consultant, Corky Harvey MS, RN, IBCLC, from The Pump Station (http://www.pumpstation.com/pumpstation/) in Los Angeles:

Latch the baby onto the breast more deeply and the pain will most likely disappear and the nipples will heal. We’d actually suggest finding a good lactation consultant to help achieve this. Don’t wait any longer as it is easier to fix early.

Meanwhile the Hydrogel dressings (such as Soothies) should be worn all the time (except when nursing) to promote moist wound healing. The nipples won’t completely heal however if the problem that is causing the damage isn’t solved.

So:
  • Get help quickly
  • Wear Soothies
  • Use nipple cream on the nipples after feeds

Hope this helps!

All the best,

I had the same problem I used Lansinoh aswell but it does stain clothing. Lansinoh did help but I did find something better and way less messy. Its called "Jack Newmans" nipple cream its available my prescription in canada. Not sure how its available in US but its awesome. Its clear in color and more like a cream its not gooey like Lansinoh. Hope this helps

Lasinoh brand lanolin Cream all the way. I wouldn't use anything else. I've tried other creams and they are clearly inferior.

I love Sweet Teets Nipple Stick by Born To Bee. It a natural moisturizer with healing oils for dry, cracked and sensitive nipples. I started using it when my nipples were dry and cracked and they were better in about 2 days. I continue to use it and it keeps them soft and moisturized. The fact that its natural makes it more comfortable for me to use because I don't want to put anything that my body will absorb or close to where my baby's mouth will be that's has alot of artificial ingredients.
You can buy it online at www.borntobee.com

DO YOU KNOW WHAT LANOLIN IS???!!
Wikipedia defines it as "a yellow waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals". I'm not a big fan of puttin animal byproduct on my skin to absorb or near where my baby's mouth is. There are better natural options.
