Difficulty getting the seasonal flu shot ... | 9/29/09 1:19 PM
So ladies, you all know it's important to get your flu shot especially if you will be pregnant during the flu season. I'm one of those who every time I've had the flu it went into complications so I don't want any chance of getting sick while pregnant. If you are worried about thimerosal (the preservative some believe is related to autism) there are plenty of thimerosal-free versions of the vaccine. Also, by you getting vaccinated you will pass on antibodies to your baby so they won't get the flu when they are so young and vulnerable.

So anyway, here's my frustrating story. Everywhere I keep hearing to get the flu shot. But my OBGYN and family Dr. don't have the vaccine. So they told me to go to a pharmacy. So I found a pharmacy that has flu shot clinics and they told me they couldn't administer the vaccine because I'm pregnant. So, the pharmacy sent me home with the vaccine in a little case and said if I took it to my OB or family Dr. they could administer it. So I get home, put the vaccine in the refridgerator and call my OB - they say they can't administer the vaccine to me because they haven't been specifically trained on it (legal/insurance requirements), same for my family Dr.

So, I have the vaccine but nobody will give it to me. Ugh! I feel like it's some weird black ops drug deal where I have to hawk my own vaccine and then come up with someone to stick it in me. Rediculous! Isn't health care wonderful? I'm going to make some more phone calls to Drs outside my network and peddle my vaccine ...

That must be extremely frustrating. I am sorry to hear you are having such a hard time, especially when you are trying to do something good for you and your baby. I hope you can find a way to get your shot soon. My work offered us the flu shot for free, I find it weird that the pharmacy that gave you the vaccine said they couldn't administer it because you are pregnant. The local Albertson's pharmacists came to give us ours and they had no issue giving me one. I had to sign a release form but so did every other employee. I would possibly call other obgyn's in your area and find out what may be best. Good luck hun!

have your OB write a note stating it is safe for them to give it to you and take it to them so the ones who gave you the drug can actually give you the shot haha! but i would question it they should have no problem giving you a flu vaccine theres some underlying reason there i would sort of be worried if i were you i know that all the clincs and walgreens around here will give even if your are pregnant. so something doesnt add up there i would check into it and make sure its the normal vaccine and everything is on the up and up because that just dosent seem right to me.

Good idea with the note thing. Get a certified note...like one with the letterhead and seal or a prescription for it from the obgyn you know! Good luck!
