Finding out the gender | 5/27/09 9:29 AM
Hi everyone! I noticed that no one has posted in this thread yet and I thought it would be fun! In a lil less than two weeks we get to find out what we are having. We are super excited! I worry that the baby won't be in a good position. I wonder how often that happens? Everyone in our family is so anxious to find out the sex of the baby, as my husband is the only on to carry on the name. How is everyone's pregnancy going? Everyone feeling better now that the first trimester is behind you?

I was so worried that my baby wouldn't be in the right position, but she was just fine. I've been told to take a bag of frozen peas and try to shock the baby a little with the cold. Coughing really deeply also can startle the baby to make it move. Or shaking and tapping on your belly. It sounds kinda mean, but it really doesn't do anything to them.

We find out in 1 week. I feel so impatient, just wanting it to be next week! My girl friend who is due a week before me just had her u/s and they said it's a 75% chance of a girl...I really hope my baby is more cooperative!

Hey Girlie Girlie...

Good luck with your ultrasound. I was one of the few unlucky souls that couldn't find out the gender. I was honestly devastated that night. Never in my life would I have thought. The baby was squirming like crazy (I've heard OJ works)... but between flipping upside down and having his/her legs in the "Indian Style" position he/she wasn't budging.

It's been almost 12 weeks since that appointment and I have to have another ultrasound next week to check on the growth of the baby (placenta was low at the 20 week appt). So I am keeping my fingers crossed but not getting my hopes up that we find out.

Like you, I am the only one who can carry on the family name. My husband is now determined that we are having a little girl. Only time will tell I guess.

I just found out yesterday that I am having a boy, and I am only 19 weeks. The earlier you are, the more difficult it is to detect. If you cannot find out from the ultrasound at your regualr OB appointment, look into specialized fetal imaging. The further along you get, the more you can see, especially with the 3 and 4d technology. Right now, the 3d makes him look more like a booger with a face, but we were able to tell 100% right away that he was a little man. Fetal imaging centers have better technology than what they carry in your reg. doctors office. My insurance even covered my visit becasue of a medical referral from my OB. Good luck and here's hoping you have what you want (a boy I am guessing?)

Adde,

I totally looked into a 3-D imaging place. But my doctor said no way jose on it. So we had to go with what he recommended.

We find out in 2 1/2 weeks and I'm also hoping the baby cooperates! I think for the most part, they can tell fairly accurately. We had a 3/4 D ultrasound with our first baby when I was about 28-29 weeks, and we'll definitely do one with this baby! So I know if for some reason we can't find out with the first u/s, then the 3D will be able to give us a clear view! If you haven't thought about it, I definetly recommend getting one! It's so amazing to see the features of your baby! Plus, by then it's easier to make the baby move to see for sure if it's a boy or girl! They say the 7th month is the best time to have one b/c the baby is big enough, but not too cramped.

I have seen some images from 3D and 4D u/s. But I guess my question is, does insurance cover those kind of u/s? I've heard they only will if you are having a high risk pregnancy. I really want to get one done, but I don't know how much it would cost... does anyone know?

I am sooo excited. Just found out two days ago at 18 weeks that we are having a little boy! I have a prev. medical condition, so I go to a mat. fetal medicine specialist for regular ultrasounds. Their equipment is really top notch, and the tech was amazing. She said that baby's do keep them humble with their gender guesses, but she was so certain it was a boy, she said she'd buy back all our blue if it turned out to be a girl. I know she was joking, but she was very confident. The baby was perfect- no issues at all, and all 10 fingers and 10 toes. Then at the end of the ultrasound, she sneaked us a few minutes of 3D ultrasound but it didn't show up on our bill ;) We saw our little boy's manhood in 3D, so we're certain that it is a boy- a healthy, perfect little boy. And finally an end to the morning sickness. Mine lasted to about 16 weeks. Congrats to all the other Oct. mommies!

Girly Girly depending on where you live they may offer it at clinics. I live outside Chicago and we have a few places that will do it for under a $100. Google 3-D ultrasounds and your state and see what comes up.

Kballard is right girly girl. Here in Ft. Myers FL we have at least one place that does 4D ultrasounds, and they only cost $150 down here for a half hour session. I would have done it if I didn't get it at my high risk specialist. They probably used to be expensive, and generally are not covered by insurance. But these days, they're pretty affordable. Good luck!

I don't know how often it happens, but my lil girl was being very shy...it took 2 scans to find out she was a she. We went in for the first scan at 19 weeks and after a good 45 minutes the tech decided she wasn't going to let us in on her little secret, not only were her legs crossed, she had the cord in between them! It was really hard to go 2 more weeks, the anticipation was killing me. Good luck, and let us know what your having!

I went for the ultrasound at 18 weeks and we "think" the baby is a girl! First of all, I had to drink 24-30 oz. of water before I went -- I was told because it inflames the uterus and makes it easier to see, but it was a very miserable experience! Anyway, she told my husband and I that she thinks it's a girl and then said she thought she saw something else, but then said, "No, I think it's a girl, I'm going to put girl in your chart." It was so frustrating!!! I go back next week and I'm going to ask if they will do another u/s to confirm and if they don't, we are going to go to a place that does u/s so we will officially know! Good luck!!!

We have a place near me and the price is well....pricey, but worth it! Just for the gender determination it is $85, but 4 pictures are included. It's more if you want to get a CD, the pictures and see your little one on a big screen! I would also get a discount because my husband is active duty military too! They don't accept insurance, cash only.
At this point, baby wouldn't cooperate for us at our 18 week appt. The tech said she thought it was a girl, but not 100% -- the cord was around her leg and at the time, she was breech. We are going next week to the fetal imagining to try again. At this point, we are only going to spend $85 because we really want to know the gender! Later on, we will probably go for the 3 and 4D....that's about $185.

Hi everyone,
I went to find out today, (i'm 20 weeks), but i'm not really happy with the results. It took a while because the baby's legs were close together and when the technician said it was a girl she didn't seen so sure. So i really think she guessed. My husband seemed a bit disappointed (he wants a boy) but he thinks she guessed too. Luckily my sister-in-law's mom is an u/s tech and will do it for free. I need confirmation. I really want to start buying baby clothes already. I'd really like to get a 3D image sometime too.
