I don't feel that I can find enough research on this topic?! Especially the H1N1 shot. I am torn into getting the shot and not sure what to do. What are you doing??

I just had my 36 week check up today. I got some conflicting info from the internet about getting the flu shot while you are pregnant. My doctor told me today to for sure get one. He said that there was some controversy over it in the past because some flu shots contained Thimerasol(Mercury) which is not good for your baby. But they no longer make the flu shots that way and it is perfectly safe for you to get the shot. He also said that by you getting the flu shot you are passing on antibodies to your baby that will prevent them from getting the flu once they are born. This is especially important as there are so many risks of babies getting RSV. I feel confident now and I am getting one this friday. If you are still worried about I would talk to your doctor about it. Hope this helps.

The H1N1 is just another form of the flu. It affects the respiratory system and is easily kicked by a healthy immune system.

Since it is a form of the flu and the regular flu takes longer to get over. I would suggest just getting the regular flu shot and that should cover all your bases. It will help you to stay healthy as well as help your baby.

I've never had the flu shot and I don't plan on getting any shots but that's just me.

Sorry I failed to mention that I am getting the regular flu shot on friday. The H1N1 vaccine doesn't come out until mid October. Most likely I will have had my baby by the time it is available but I am still planning on getting that one as well.

After you get yours tell me how you feel, I remember when I got my first flu shot and I got the flu shortly after. I haven't had the flu since 2004.

I got the flu shot yesterday and feel a little achy today, my arm hurt a lot yesterday but I took some tylenol and took a nap and felt better after that. I think its better to be safe than sorry with the flu shot, even if you get a little sick from the shot its better than getting the flu especially being pregnant. My mom works in healthcare and insisted that I have both shots (seasonal flu and h1n1). So I am going with her advice and getting both.

Call me the devil's advocate...but if the H1N1 virus is floating around why are they waiting until October to come out with the vaccine??? Are they still working on it??? Haven't they known about the virus since at least April??

Don't get me wrong I don't ever think anyone's Dr. would steer them wrong. You need to trust your Dr. more than you need to listen some crazy pregnant woman rant about the do's and don'ts of whether or not to get a vaccination. If you think it is the right decision or if you think it isn't the right decision, either way you're right!

I'm 33 weeks... & Personally Im not going to get the H1N1 flu shot or any flu shot for that matter. I've never gotten the vaccine and I've never had the flu. I dont really trust this new vaccine anyway... some doctors are completely for it... and some are completely against it so... Its something to make your own judgement call about. I would hate to hear a few years down the line that this new vaccine is to blame for developmental problems in young children or cronic health problems... History always seems to repeat itself...

My OBGYN told me to definitely get both flu and H1N1 vaccines...my general practice doc told me to only get the reg flu shot...very conflicting advice. I think that I am going to get the reg flu shot and wait until more people have been given the H1N1 vac and see if they start dying off or becoming mutants before I get one....Good Luck!

My OB believes that if they could have foreseen the future they would have combined the shots into one so that everyone would have gotten the H1N1 vaccine with the regular flu shot.

She also said the flu shot is a guess and test for which strain they think will be going around the area. In my area over the past few years they've guessed one strain will go around so they give that shot and there ends up being a different strain that goes around and people get the flu anyway.

She also said if you get the shot before your baby arrives the shot can help protect your baby up to 5 months, but 9 times out of 10 if the child comes in contact with the virus they are most likely going to get sick just because their immune systems aren't strong enough to fight anything yet.

Don't know about anyone else, but my area is running out of flu shots to give so don't stay on the fence too long if you are planning on getting one. The H1N1 vaccine is not available yet in my area. I'm still not getting either shot but that's my choice. I don't mind helping you ladies gather more information so you feel confident about the choice you are making.
