Gestational Diabetes Test? | 7/25/08 11:11 AM
I took a screening test yesterday for gestational diabetes and didn't pass. According to the doctor, the number should have been below 140 and mine was 151. I didn't fast (was told not to worry about it) and now I have to go back and do a 3 hour fasting test. I have to fast after midnight, have blood drawn at 8:00 that morning and then drink twice as much of the glucose drink as I did yesterday and then have my blood drawn again 3 times each hour for the next 3 hours. I FINALLY gained some weight this visit (2 pounds!) and am now 8 pounds less than I was when we started the pregnancy so I absolutely haven't gained too much weight, etc. The doctor said it was just a precaution but my father is diabetic and I'm nervous about it. Does anyone else have any experience with this?

Yes, I have failed the 1 hour test 4 pregnancies! I always pass the 3 hour test. It is a crummy test and I always try to talk my doctor out of it and I never win that arguement. Just think of it as a right of passage!

I too failed my 1 hour test but I actually fasted! I then went and did the 3 hour test and while it was incredibly boring and felt like 30 hours I passed it. I could have put money on the fact that it would come back positive because I had all of the other "signs" of gestational diabetes including a rather large baby but luckily all came back normal. I'm sure you probably had the problem because you didn't fast during the first test! Good Luck to you!!!

I noticed that everyone on this thread talks about fasting before the gestational diabetes test. I am due to take my test on August 4th, and my doctor told me to eat a normal breakfast and lunch before I have the test. I just shouldn't eat or drink anything with a lot of sugar, particularly fruit or fruit juices. I know every doctor is different, but I was just curious as to whether everyone that takes this test should fast.....

My doctor told me not to worry about fasting as well. Then I went to the lab and the tech asked me if I had been fasting, I told her I had not and she sent me away. I would suggest speaking with your lab tech and see what they want you to do- fast or not fast. After all they are the people that are going to be taking the blood or turning you away and you don't wanna waste your time going in to ultimately have to go back the next day!!

Hope this helps!

I didn't have to fast before my testing. All I had to do was show up, drink my sugary drink in 5 minutes, come back in an hour, and get my blood drawn. They haven't called me back, so I'm assuming everything is fine here.

I was really sick the day before and couldn't keep much down. I wonder if that might have thrown the results off. Also, I had cereal and orange juice for breakfast that morning (like always!!) and now I wonder if the juice might have been too sugary?? Any thoughts?? I am going back in Wednesday for the 3 hour deal.

Hang in there! I too failed the 1 hour test twice! I registred at 285! I now take my blood sugars 4x's a day as well follow a diet drawn up by a dietian. I have been able to control my sugars so far and have only had 2-3 times when I was totally out of range. I actually have issues now with low blood sugar. Go figure...

I took the 3 hour fasting test today and think I'm okay. Doctor wasn't there but lab tech that did bloodwork told me that my numbers were okay. I will feel better once I hear from the doctor but I'm glad that's over. (I hope)

I feel like I wrote this thread!!! I failed my 1-hour test and then had to come back for the 3-hour test. When I got there, they took my blood and the lab tech said that I was normal. I went on to take the full bottle of the glucose drink (YUCK) and was told I couldn't even drink the bottled water I had brought! I didn't eat since 7p.m. the night before although I did eat some fruit for dessert. I called the doctor and they said that I barely failed by just a few points but just like a test in school, failing is failing. I have to go to the doctor to get my blood testing kit so I can test myself at home to see what to do next. The doctor said that I failed 2 out of 4 of the tests. Passed the fasting test, failed the next 2 blood draws, and then passed the last. Go figure! I am not looking forward to changing my meal plan, but if it's what's best for the baby, then I want to do it... but It's summer and I enjoy my fruits and ice cream...

Okay, the tech told me I'd be fine as long as the 3 numbers after drinking the glucose averaged less than 140 which they did. My readings were 162, 131, and then 118. My fasting one to start was 79 (this one isn't included in the averages). Now I'm wondering if I'm really okay or not. I REALLY do not want to end up doing the 4 draws a day thing but I will do whatever I have to do for baby to be okay.

I too did not pass the 1 hour test (140). So they have me up for the 3 hour test next month. It sounds awful as the only thing thaty does not make me nauseous is eating every 2 hours - let alone having all that blood drawn.

My Mom (an RN with diabetes) said that is bogus and there is NO NEED IN THIS DAY AND AGE for a 3 hour fasting test.

You simply ask they give you the Hemaglobin AIC blood test - a single blood draw which gives them an average over the previous 3 months. Done. I'm calling my midwife today!

Can we turn down the glucose testing all together?
I am planning a C-section because I have had 2 previous C's and my age.
