Getting what I want | 11/28/08 8:39 PM
Im 7mths pregnant and have registered at Baby R Us and Target. I did ALOT of research on cribs and mattresses. After 3 days on the net I finally found a crib for $300 and dresser/changer for $400 that was beautiful, safe, and economical. My mother-in-law was nice enough to offer to buy the crib and when I told her which one I had chosen she said it was too expensive and that she could get one just as good for $100.00. Another family member offered to buy the dresser/changer with out complaint. Now Im worried that I'll get the dresser and some cheap crib that wont match. Am I wrong if I tell my mother-in-law to not get me the cheap crib?

I don't think that you're wrong at all. This is your baby and your choice should be what is most important. Now, you can offer to tell your mother-in-law that you would be glad to cover the rest of the cost of the crib if she would be willing to help out with some of the cost. You should not have to settle for mediocrity when choosing something that your baby is supposed to be safe and secure in. If she refuses to chip in for the more expensive crib, tell her she is more than welcome to choose something else for the baby.

I totally agree. Get what you want. It is your nursery, and if you are anything like me, it will bother you if it isn't exactly what you envision. This is your baby and such an exciting time, and it is natural to want everything perfect. $300-$400 is not that expensive, compared to some of what's out there. I looked at countless nursery sets, and ended up over doubling by budget bc I really fell in love with a set I found. The cheaper furniture is fine and functional, but I think you can tell the difference in quality, and what matters is that you are happy with it. My baby is due in 3 weeks, and his room is my favorite place to be these days! I'm so glad we splurged on what we liked best. There are other places to cut corners, anyway! I actually ended up buying a mattress for only $100, which is rated one of the best mattresses in that baby bargains book. Its the Colgate Classica II mattress. It smells fine, is nice and firm, very lightweight, and no one will ever see it!

Thank your mother-in-law, and tell her that another family member offered to purchase the set for you and suggest something else she could help out with that might be more in her budget. Good luck!
