Graves Disease... | 3/24/08 6:36 PM
Hello ...I am new here. My husband and I have been trying for #2 for the past 6 months. After I went to my pre-conception visit at the Doctor in August, I found out I was hyperthyroid. I eventually found out it was caused by Graves Disease. It is not uncommon to have trouble conceiving with Graves, but it is possible. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing? Advice is appreciated

Hi there!
I also have thyroid issues, but had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, or Autoimmune thyroiditis. Basically, my autoimmune system attacked my thyroid gland and "killed" it. I went back and forth for a while between hyper and hypothyroid and am now hypothyroid becauese I don't have a thyroid gland. My husband and I had been trying to conceive for 8 months and we found out about 4 months into it that my levels were off and I was not producing eggs.

I worked with my endocrinologist and we modified Synthroid levels in order to come up with the right dosage that would work for me. Low and behold, my labs were right on this month and I am 6 weeks pregnant.

I am not too familiar with Graves disease and how that affects fertility, but was told that if the thyroid levels are in the normal range, I would not be any different than anyone else trying to get pregnant. So, keep on trying and hoping! It will happen for you!

Thank you so much for the message of hope! Sometimes that's all I need to hear.

It is not suggested that you TTC while the Grave's disease is not controlled. That means either by radioactive iodine ablation or through anti-thyroid medications. Grave's disease is an autoimmune disease and has many side effects other than hyperthyroidism. I was diagnosed and treated by ablation. Thyroid disease can cause many symptoms for the fetus as well. I found a lot of helpful info on www.thyroid.about.com please look there and discuss any questions you might have after with your endocrinologist. A primary care physician is not qualified to handle your needs with this. After you are in remission you are able to conceive and it can be difficult, but very possible. Don't get down, but please proceed carefully. Good Luck.
