Induction without Epidural?

Induction without Epidural? | 9/4/09 1:21 PM
So, I'm 32 weeks pregnant, and my ob and I were discussing a possible induction at 38 or 39 weeks. We were just tossing the idea around as a possibility. The reasoning would be that my hubby has moved to TX for a job leaving me in FL to have the baby. This is our 1st baby, and he certainly would not want to miss it. I know 1st labors are notoriously long, but it would still be risky to wait until I go into labor to call him to fly home. He'll only have 2 weeks to spend w/ me, so we really don't want him to take off work until pretty close to when the baby is born, so he can spend all the time possible w/ our baby. Anywho, whether or not I'm induced will hinge on a lot of things like the condition of my cervix when the time comes, but my question is this, is it possible to go without an epidural or pain meds when you're induced? I've heard the pain feels much worse because the Pitocin isn't as gradual a progression as natural labor. Has anyone done it? I absolutely do not want an epidural for personal reasons as I had a bad experience w/ a spinal tap as a child, and the needle in the back thing is quite disturbing to me. There other reasons such as wanting mobility and as natural experience as possible, etc... But at any rate, does anyone have experience with induction without pain meds? Or without an epidural, but with other pain meds?

Fancygirl04- I had my first two children by induction because of high blood pressure. I also opted to NOT have an epidural for either. I don't yet have another experience to compare it to, but will have the opportunity soon =). It really depends on your personal pain threshold and just how much you are opposed to an epidural.I will not tell you that it was easy because labor is just what the name suggests...LABOR, but I made it with two beautiful children. I would make this suggestion..make a plan, but remain flexible... Remember too, that there are more pain management options than epidural. ASK YOUR DOCTOR LOTS OF QUESTIONS!!!!!!

Thanks! I think I will remain more open to alternative pain management options than I would have if it was a natural labor progression. We'll see how things go if we opt for the induction or not, but glad to hear that it's do-able.

I just had my beautiful baby girl this past Wed. and was induced. I was 38.5 weeks and had high blood pressure so they induced. I wasn't able to have the epidural due to a very dangerously low platelete count so I actually ended up having to have an emergency c-section. Definitely not in the plan, but she's here and I love her so much! I hope it all works out for you! My labor was a challenge, but they say about forgetting about the pain once it's over....I can honestly agree. Granted, I'm still sore from the staples, but seeing my baby girl puts all away! i'm sure you will figure what is best for you and remember this: even with a plan....it my not go as planned! I know I really wanted the epidural, but my health and the baby's health and safety was much more important!!!

I was induced with all 4 of my children, and am considering it again. That being said, i tried to go without pain meds with my first child while being induced. The pitocin makes the contractions so strong and unbearable. I was miserable, i opted for an epidural and it made the whole process so much more enjoyable. i had an epidural with each delivery after that and i plan on having one with this delivery as well. It made all the difference for me. I had no trouble pushing the baby out, you can still feel pressure and you know when to push.

My experience would say to hold off until the baby is ready. My first two children were born using the Bradley Natural Child Birth Method and everyone in our class was successful. My doctor had a due date that was a little earlier than the one that I calculated both times and ......I naturally had them both on the due date that I calculated. I have had friends that had doctors convince them to induce and they did not have great hospital or delivery experiences. I know that the convenience would help, however you have to decide what is more important to you and your husband.
