Just Starting Out. Would Love Lessons & Advice. | 7/20/09 11:16 AM
I am just starting to try for our first child with my husband. I have been off birth control since May and after a clear bill of health from doctors we are ready to add to our family. I need any tips or suggestions to help us along the way. I am very NEW at this, so any tips would be very helpful. Thank you!

well mostly all i can say is dont get discouraged if it takes a while i am only 20 years old and we tried for over a year as my husband is 26 going to be 27 i was on birth control and it took my body almost 18 months for it to compeltly rid itself of it and i am in the army and work out every day eat healthy so i thought it would never happen and when we started to relax and say if it happens it happens thats when we got pregnant and now i am due on march 4th so basicly relax have fun with it and dont kill your self over ovulation test kits and worrying about it ...it will happen soon enough and when that little positive sign shows up that feeling you get there are no words for it also when you see baby stuff on sale pick it up it will help you save in the long run! good luck and lots and lots of baby dust!! also if you feel like you might be pregnant and the test shows a negative bug your doctor i was 5 weeks and 5 days before i got a HPT that was pos. and i just knew i was about 4 weeks before that so if you think you are dont be shy to get what you need done!!

Thank you for the advice, and congratulations to yourself. I was on birth control for five years, so I feel like I will be going to have to take some time for it to come out of my body. It's only been three months so far..I am going to try and have the attitude that if it happends, woo-hoo, and if it doesn't then enjoy the extra practice. Keep in touch, and good luck!!!

I tried every trick possible. We used basal temperatures, ovulation kits, counting days, drinking Robitussin (yes, Robitussin... It creates a more lubricated "environment" for the sperm to travel), elevating legs for 30 minutes after sex... We did all this for about 7 or 8 months and then realized that we weren't having fun with each other anymore. It became a chore. So we just stopped "trying" and within 18 days, I was pregnant. So my advice to you is to just have fun with your husband and let it happen when it's supposed to. Remember that it takes the average healthy couple between 6 months and a year to conceive. Good luck to you! It's a challenging, but amazing experience.

lol i sent you a friend invite and added you to my network so if you ever need any more adivce or help dont be afraid to ask! Also the pill takes less time to rid itself from your body i was on the shot and before that i was on the pill so i had that combination of the 2 working against me so that is why it took me so long so yeah just relax and it will happen at the perfect time!

Thank you so much for the advice! It's only been three months and I am trying not to worry..just let it happen. My best friend just got her IUD out and is trying for her second child and she insists that we have our kids together but I told her I can't make it happen any sooner then its supposed to!! I was on the NUVA ring..Any idea how long they say thats supposed to take to rid your system? Well if it's six months..lets say were halfway there. If it's a year..I will say I am halfway there at six. In the mean time I have to enjoy my husband and dogs before life gets crazy!!

I was on birth control for about 3 years. Got off of it, and 2 months later was pregnant with my first child. I guess with every person is different. But, all I can say is to keep up with what your doing. I think you just 'know' when you get pregnant. Atleast I did. Take everything one day at a time and don't get yourself upset if it doesn't happen right away. With my first, like I said I got pregnant right away. Now, I'm due Feb. 21st and it took us about a year or so. Just keep your head up and good luck to you! Oh, and PATIENCE. Thats a must!

The best advice I can give you and your husband is go on VACATION...my husband is in the Air Force and he took a month of leave in June and that's when it happened for us. We had been trying for months, I also worked a very high stress job. So I know if you are relaxed and just having fun I think the magic happens then and there. It really doesn't matter how long you were on birth control before, the day you stop taking the pill is the day you can get pregnant. It's all about timing, I thought for me since I wanted to get pregnant it would indeed take forever, but like I said go on a nice vacation!!!! Good luck!!!! Have fun with all the trying too, its the good part.

I was on the nuva ring for almost two years and bc pills for about 7 years before that and I was pregnant within 2 months of stopping. I think it really depends on your fertility, diet, stress levels, etc.

Good luck!

My husband and I were very fortunate. We knew we wanted kids soon after marriage so while on the honeymoon (b/c tampons and disney don't mix). I let him smash my pills on the 2nd to last day. It's been determined that I was pregnant about 10 days later.

I think the test kits and everything take the "fun" out of it. I can recommend some good champagne and some good old fashioned fun to help loosen things up. We had sex just about every night (ooooh, those were the days.) I did lay there for a little bit afterwards instead of "rushing" to the bathroom.

But your body will let you know when you are ready. Best wishes.

All the words of advice and wishes mean so much to me. We own our own house, and have two dogs. Were going to look at new vehicles and I think the stress of more car payments might hinder my chances...but I am sticking to the advice to livin' it up, and having fun until the day comes! My husband is getting a layoff on thursday for eight weeks...so maybe that will help in the efforts!!

Another piece of advice my doctor gave me was not to have sex every day. Alternate days. It gives your hubby a chance to build up some extra little swimmers and that raises your chances. Good luck!
