MTHFR and Factor V Leiden support | 5/14/08 5:20 PM
I have had several miscarriages and with my last successful pregnancy (4 years ago) was diagnosed with MTHFR and Factor V Leiden, both blood diseases from what I understand. I have had several more miscarriages since then. I also have to take progesterone for the first 12 weeks. I am pregnant now and am about 7 weeks. I feel like I'm faced with a triple whammy and at no point can I "relax" because I'm "through the dangerous period (the first trimester)". With my son, my obgyn told me I could never assume that my pregnancy would be successful no matter how far along I was.

I'm just so down, depressed, and discouraged. I want to be happy about being pregnant again finally, but it's so hard not to worry about it. Does anyone else have all these problems? I just feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel and no one understands.

Hey there. I am in the same boat as you are. I lost my first son when I was 8 and 1/2 months pregnant with him. I then found out that I had MTHFR and when I was pregnant with my 2nd, I was scared the entire pregnancy. It seemed like I was never going to hear the sound of his cry when I was giving birth to him.

We are actually in the process of trying to concieve again and the fears are already setting in again. I don't think there is anyway to get rid of them, but all we can do is put our faith in God that he will take care of us.

If you ever want to talk about it with someone's whose been there, feel free to message me. I think it has helped me to have someone who knows what I have been through to talk to, so maybe the same will go for you.

I can't even begin to imagine how difficult that must have been for you. I tend to miscarry very early. It's just so discouraging sometimes. I'm nearing my eigth week now and just can't get into it. I know that may sound terrible, but the truth is, until I did hear my son cry I just never believed it was actually going to happen. And I feel that way now. Between the shots, the progesterone therapy and all the meds because of the Factor V Leiden, it's just so very difficult.

Thanks for your words, it does help a little. I don't know a single person with the same or even similar problems.

yeah, i know how that is. it wasn't until i heard his cry as well that i knew everything was okay. and i'm sure that you know what i mean when i say that when they cry in the middle of the night, it's one of the most comforting sounds in the world, where as to most people it's an annoyance.

just try as hard as possible to keep positive. remember the more stress you have, the more you're putting on that baby. and never feel guilty for calling the doctor too many times, i did at first, but then realized THAT'S WHAT I'M PAYING THEM FOR!

it wont get easier, you already know that. but you have the opprtunity to make your faith stronger.

That is true. I tell people my son is my "miracle child." I never expected to do this again. But my hubby and I are very hopeful....thanks again. It means a lot to know that someone else out there has the same complications.

hi...
i just got dx w factor v homo, factor II hetero and MTHFR hetero...I had my daughter 3 years ago w no complications before dx. when she was 2 (one year ago this Sept) we started trying for our second got preggo right away and found out at 8.5 weeks no hb missed miscarriage. dr didn't think much of this and sent me on my way. I got preggo the next month only to have a chemical at 4.5 weeks. dr said it was bc i got preggo too soon after dnc. i believed her and took off 3 months and got preggo again 3 months later-again chemical 4.5 weeks. now i wanted some answers...i insisted i get a blood work up and all the fun stuff came up...i was very upset for i am adopted and know NOBODY but my daughter who is my blood. i wanted a big family and this was my worst nightmare coming true. the mfm dr i went to go see gave me NO hope of having another child. she said it is risky and bla bla...went to see hemo who told me i will be fine mostlikely w lovenox shots 2x's a day at poss preggo test. listened and had another chemical this month. by the time i called her got an appointment i had started bleeding.
now i am going to see reproductive endocronologist this week. I am nervous and excited. I need help! I have a feeling I need lovenox prior to getting preggo. maybe while ttc. nervous too bc i could have gotten myself preggo this month wouldn't know for a week and 1/2..maybe he could put me on something now and i would be okay.
any thoughts...? i am taking baby asprin, extra folic acid, extra b vitamins, and prenatal...what are you taking???? did you have your little baby yet?

Hi,

I know your post was a long time ago but wanted to find out how things went with your pregnancy if you don't mind. I have a luteal phase defect (very low prog) + factor 5 leiden. Just had bloodwork today to test for mthfr so I don't know yet if that's an issue. I also feel the odds are stacked against me and can't have any excitement around pregnancy. Had 2 m/c's + 1 chemical. Ugh! Hope you're well. I "felt your pain" when I read your post.

Hi Amanda,

Sorry to hear of your losses. It sounds horrible. I had 2 early m/c's and 1 chem. Am taking prog + estrogen every month in case i get preg. Did you do the lovenox injections or a blood thinner like that? I will probably have to do the injections. Hope all is well. Thank you.

I have Factor V and during my pregnancy had to take blood thinners shots everyday till I gave birth and six weeks after. I never had a clot but because my twin sister had one during her last pregnancy they did not want to take a risk on me. I have two older sister's who have had one girl eash with no problems during their pregnancy. They both have factor V and one has MTHFR. My mother-in-law told me that there is a lady she knows that also has factor v and she has had 6 kids. The only time she has a problem was when she was carrying boys and she would have to go on blood thinners. When she had girls she had no problem. I know I must seem to be rambling on but I was just interested to see if anyone had a problem with clots when they were carrying a girl? Thanks.

I've had eight miscarriages #6 and #7 were eleven years apart and it was after #7 that testing finally showed that I am positive FVL and MTHFR. Earlier testing had shown a slight progesterone deficiency now my estradiol and FSH levels are questionable. After #7 I was put on folbee, prenatal, and baby aspirin. I got pregnant only after taking an herbal weight loss supplement that contained an estrogenic herb. I am now waiting for the end of May when my reg ob/gyn and I will reconvene to plan another pregnancy and this time add in heparin. The longest I carried was to nine weeks - well the baby survived to that point and my body continued to carry for almost a month later. that was #6. #7 the doc had to give me a methotrexate injection, # 8 I carried for two weeks after initial drop in hCG levels before my body finally released - and that was with me uping my aspirin dosage to two a day, went junk food and caffeine, as well as slept with a heating pad on high .. all in hopes to help my body dispell of the pregnancy with as few complications as possible and it worked - rather than pieces the full 'tissue' came out at one time followed shortly after by a huge blood clot. (sorry for TMI)

On one hand I feel like saying I'm getting too close to menopause and should just give up but the other hand I just feel I can not give up, that perhaps something with my case will enlighten my doctors to more knowledge which will be passed on to other doctors and help others to not endure what I have endured. --- After #6 I had taken on a give up attitude, #7 surprised me greatly and renewed the drive to strive to be a biological mother.

Just wanted to let others know y'all are not alone. Hang in there don't give up - the emotional aspect is tough but you can get through it. Thanks y'all for posting here and letting me know I'm not alone.
