Nipple Piecing scars affect breastfeeding? | 10/5/09 8:46 AM
I had my nipples pierced for about a year, but that was nearly 2.5 years ago. Does anyone know if this has an impact on the ability to extract milk- i.e- too much or not enough due to scar tissue? I am currently able to squeeze out a tiny bit of whiteish substance from the scars (more solid than liquid), but not anywhere else on my nipple- is this colostrum or something else- I have never had it before my pregnancy.

Any advice would be helpful!

I'm sure nothing beats the personal experience of others, but here is what one of The Cradle's experts had to say about this topic (although it's not about scar tissue):

Will Nipple Piercing Affect Breastfeeding?

Good luck!!

I had a friend breast feed after nipple piercings were in for years so I think as long as it was properly done and in the right spot you shoul dbe ok

I've had mine done for 11 years. (yeah, a friend pierced them with a hypodermic needle from Fleet Farm when I was 15.. Then repierced professionally when I was 19.. I'm just cool like that I took them out as soon as some of the nipple sensitivity went down after the first trimester.

I brought this up with my OB on my second visit. She said it shouldn't be a problem at all since the nipple is more like a sieve than a single tube-the scars shouldn't get in the way. She even suggested I could keep them in if I wanted. I decided the nipple rings were sexual, and that would be totally wierd to have baby trying to latch on around them. She agreed.

Congrats to all the moms-to-be! Thanks for sharing your stories ladies. I have had my nipple pierced for about 5 or 6 years and took mine out about a month ago. I'm 6 months. Every few days I put my ring back in just to keep it open.

Does anyone know if it will remain open after birth and breast feeding begins or will I have to have it re-pierced???

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I had my nipples pierced about 15 years ago. I had some migration problems and had to take them out, but I was left with a lot of scar tissue.
When my son was born, I noticed a lump in my nipple with the most scar tissue and seemed to have a hard time with him latching on that side. Also, nothing came out of that side. In addition, the nurses in the hospital were not helpful AT ALL.
So, I just attached myself to a breast pump and pumped every two hours for a couple days and then BAM! Problem solved.
I've had that whitish material from my nipples for years. I had a doctor check it out and he said it was normal discharge. I would suggest you ask your doctor to check it just in case.
Good luck to you and your baby!

xoxo

I also had my nipples pierced for about a year several years ago and had the same concern. I had been able to squeeze out whitish skin tissue through those holes even before my pregnancy. Colostrum is very yellow, like a dark highlighter or even orangish color and I saw it in my ninth month. It didn't come out of the piercing sites, but the tip of the nipple. Now that I am breastfeeding, the milk comes out just fine, but I have seen it come out of the piercing holes too. My guess is that as your breasts change and grow in preparation for nursing, the white skin tissue is getting pushed out even though you've never seen it before. Bottom line: everything should go just fine! Enjoy the end of your pregnancy!

I had my nipples pierced for 2 years before I got pregnant and didn't have any trouble breast feeding at all. Flow was great, the only down side was that the piercing closed.
