Nursing after a Breast Reduction? | 6/17/08 9:09 PM
I had a breast reduction in 2005 after reassurances from the doctor that should I decide I wanted to nurse after having children, that it wouldn't be a problem. It turns out that almost all the advice he gave turned out to be WRONG and I am afraid this is as well. I looked on his website about a year after the procedure and not only were my before/after pics there (WITHOUT MY PERMISSION) but it said right beside the breast reduction procedure link: not recommended for those planning to breastfeed. I have ALWAYS planned to breastfeed and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this???

I don't know from experience, but I read in my " What to Expect When you're Expecting" book that a breast reduction shouldn't affect breastfeeding. You should be fine to breast feed. I would also follow up on him putting those pictures up without permission, that's definitely against the law! Good luck! If you haven't already I'd say go pick up that book to, It's a life saver!

I have done a lot of research on this topic because I was planning on getting a breast reduction a few years ago. After speaking with the doctor and vocalizing my desire to nurse my children the doctor recommended that I not have the procedure done at that time. What I was told is that it's not impossible to breast feed after a reduction but it may pose a problem if the milk ducts are damaged. From what I have read there is no way to tell before trying to nurse if you will or will not have a problem. I wish I could have given you better news but unfortunately there is no way to tell for sure if there is going to be an issue. I hope all goes well, I'm sure you feel very violated and lied to. Good luck to you!!

From what I understand, the only way there would be a problem with nursing is if the milk ducts are damaged. If the procedure was done correctly, this shouldn't be a problem. I would definitely look into getting your picture off the site too! That's just plain illegal and he could (and should)get a hefty fine for doing that. Best of luck to you and I hope everything works out for the best.

Sorry I left this out...but those pictures have definitely been removed. I complained VERY loudly and they were removed within the hour! He knew he was flat out wrong and he's been charged with several malpractice issues since and is no longer with the group he helped found because of this! Thank you all for your support and info. I really don't know what I'd do without this site!
