Please help! Baby pooping problems | 4/18/08 4:33 PM
So, my daughter is three weeks old as of Wednesday, and everything had been going really well up until a few days ago. All of a sudden, she is having a hard time with her bowel movements, straining really hard and crying her poor little heart out off and on for hours at a time. She is entirely breastfed, and as gross as it may be, the color and consistency of her poop hasn't changed, so I don't know what the problem is. All I know is that it breaks my heart to see my baby girl in pain, and I was wondering if anyone else has been through this and might have found some relief for their baby.

I would call and see if it's okay to give her a little bit of water in a bottle. I believe that would be fine-but call just in case-i used to call the hospital newborn unit the first few weeks. Maybe just an ounce or two a day....hope that helps.

Ck with your doc first, but I have also heard mixing a little Karo syrup will help with constipation also.

Let your doc know & he/she can fix her up-poor thing!

Good Luck!

Well another thing that you can try is maybe some jello water, just a little bit in a bottle and shake it up.. my son had that problem and i gave him that and he has not had any other problems. But if you would like it might be better to call your doctor first, because they might want you to just bring her in too.

Well, my son had alot of problems with pooping. He went through the same thing. I tried water and my Dr. told me to, now I'm sorry if this disturbs you, but told me to try putting just the tip of my pinky finger or a thermometer up the bum to bring relief. It works. You may think it's gross but anything that will bring relief to your child is worth it and it did not bother my son at all. He is 4 now and has no bowel problems. Good luck

My daycare lady had the BEST solution for babies... 1 ounce of room temperature water.... works like a charm!!!! Also, if that doesn't work 1 tsp of Karo syrup in their formula... good too!!!!

My son also had the same problem. We did several things, first we tried CLEAR karo syrup (there is a dark version). I tsp. That worked for a while but stopped. We were also told by our doctor that when our baby started to look like he was trying to go to take his legs and make a bicycle motion with them. Babies simultaneously try to push and close their anus at the same time. The bicycle motion helps them do one or the other. Ultimately, we had to change our sons formula but if your daughter is breastfed, that's obviously not the issue with you. Good luck.

I know that baby massage on the tummy helped with my son when he was little. I've also heard good things about the water and kayro syrup. I have a feeling that the doc will want to see your baby because of her age. Unfortunately, they may want you try supplementing with some formula until she gets her issues straightened out. Give them a call and I am sure the doc will fix the problem.

I would check with your doctor but as a nurse I would advise against all of these post saying to give your child water, kayro syrup or jello water..especially in a breastfed baby. Breast milk gives babies all the liquid they need and giving water or other home remedies such as kayro syrup can be very dangerous especially to newborns under 5 weeks of age. Giving them water between feedings takes away from important time at the breast at this age. Their brains are developing so rapidly that they need all the nutritional benefits and calories found in your milk and not in water. Giving a newborn water can also lead to water intoxication, bloating, seizures and also a permanent decrease in your milk supply. Something else may be causing the problem such as gas if the consistency of the stool remains the same. I would try mylicon drops first or moving their legs up and down to their tummy can help things along as well(half a dropperful is safe to give at every feeding if necessary.) With a child that young and exclusively breastfed I would want them to see a doctor just to rule out any type of medical problem first. Hope they feel better soon.

I actually called my doctor about the problem, and she actually told me to try a little karo syrup in my breastmilk. I bought some, but never had the chance to use it, as her little spell of not being able to go got broken the same day and she has been doing very well ever since. Thanks to everyone for all the thoughtful advice though!
