Preterm Labor and Bedrest | 5/8/09 5:50 PM
So i went in for a regular check up with my doc at 31 weeks. And to my surprise he tells me that my cervix is soft and could be starting to dilate. And since I've told him I've had a couple braxton hicks every once in a while...He sent me to the Hospital to be monitored.
Had an ultrasound done and a couple hours of monitoring. And the baby is big and healthy. At already 4.5 lbs. But of course the lungs haven't finished developing and my cervix is funneling from the inside. Then I had two contractions while on the monitors.

So I'm on complete bed rest.. had to take 2 doses of Steroids (for the baby's lungs) I'm not suppose to be in the up right position or on my feet for more than 30 minutes...throughout the day.

Problem is. I have two toddlers here at the house with me. One fresh out of potty training...and just moved to a state where I have no family. and my husband is still in Iraq, not due to Come in for 6 more weeks.

So Anyone else have to do bedrest and did it help?

Also, anyone know how to do bed rest correctly with two small children? Right now we're safety gated in the kitchen/family room with movies, snacks and a potty chair next to the couch, where I'm laying. But it's hard to keep my 4 year old from tearing down the fence or raiding the fridge and cabinets.

I have no experience or advice as I'm just having my first now, but I wanted to wish you luck. I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

I was also put on bed rest due to preterm labor at 31 1/2 weeks. I was actually contracting quite a bit. I was admitted into the hospital for one night, also given steroids. It did help. I am finally off bed rest now at 35 weeks because I am out of the danger zone. If you can hold off for at least 2 to 3 weeks it would help. I had limited trips to the bathroom so I was able to get up a little bit.

Do you have any friends that could help you with the kids? Neighbors? I fortunately had my mother-in-law and my mom during the day and my husband at night.

I definitely feel for you. I would also talk to your OB/GYN to see if he can give you any advice. I hope this helps.

Ok good news Ya'll. I am flying my mother-in-law out on Monday to come help me. I think I can survive the weekend alone.

I didn't even think about the Doctors taking me off Bed Rest. Here I think I'm stuck here for the next 8 weeks. lol. If I can just make it thru the danger zone, like you said, then baby will be healthy enough to come anytime after that.
We just get discouraged and worried sick when any little thing goes wrong. I'm use to healthy pregnancies and deliveries, that this really threw me for a spin.

Thanks for the Ray of Hope...I just hope my husband can make it in time.

Glad to hear you are going to get some help, which should help reduce your stress. Stress won't help you or your little one. I know we all worry about when something goes wrong. Keep thinking good thoughts you'll make it. I never thought I could but I told myself that this was the best thing for the baby. Just take it one day at a time, and think of it this way, one more day inside is better than nothing. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know how you're doing.

Im only 26 weeks pregnant and have been in the hospital already for a week now. Only aloud to get up to use the restroom then must lie right back down. I came in a week ago 4cm dialated and my membrane sac was already coming down. So now im stuck in the hospital on constant medacine to keep me from having contractions. anyone else similar?

I went into the hospital yesterday with contractions and horrible pain in my side and back. They sent me home after 6 hours of monitoring, two shots to stop the contractions and a shot of morphine. Not dilated or anything but they said I pulled a ligament in my stomach. Now I'm on bed rest. I was on bed rest from 26 weeks on last time with my baby boy, but this time completely different- I guess because he is bigger and I am just not meant to have big babies! I have to monitor my contractions throughout the day and try to stay hydrated in Arizona!

Alright Ya'll. All the bedrest has paid off. I'm 2 days to my due date and still pregnant. My husband got home from Iraq around Fathers Day..and everything is doing great.
Thanks for all the support and suggestions. -It can be done!

i am 29 weeks pregnat and just went into premature labor, they were able to stop it in time tho, i also had steriod shots for his lungs, and shot to stop contractions, and i have to take pills to keep them from coming back, i also am on total bedrest like you with a two and three year at home, its going to be hard cause my husband works and not always can we get a baby sitter, but his boss will let him take that time off of work to be home with me cause its way to soon to have this baby, wish i could be of more help to ya but i am in almost the same situation as you, good luck with the baby and hope he is healthy
