Shooting pains in the groin? | 7/31/09 6:03 PM
Okay, so I went to the doctor yesterday for a routine checkup. Baby's head is down, fluid is good around him, measuring a little small ( think he may have dropped) and I'm not dilated or anything. I am 35 weeks and 5 days. For the last week I've had really bad shooting pains in my groin that feel like the baby is trying to push his way out. Sometimes they accompany Braxton Hicks contractions and sometimes they come on their own, unexpected and crippling! I haven't discussed this with my doctor, because he is out of town. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced these pains in their last trimester, and if so what do they mean? Does it mean I will start dilating soon or have the baby? (I mean should I get my hopes up that I will have him soon?) or does it just mean the baby is just pressing against a nerve? Advice?!?

Oh my gosh, I've been experiencing these exact pains off and on all day, but I'm only 26 weeks 6 days. I did some internet research and didn't find any answers or clarity as to what it could be. I'm interested in finding out what this might be. I too am looking forward to any posts regarding this subject! If it doesn't stop or gets more frequent (right now it's about once every couple of hours, but nearly debilitating for a couple of seconds when it does occur), I will probably visit the Dr. or ER.

It is definitely very painful and as soon as my doctor gets in I am going to call him. The only thing I can think is that the baby is starting to drop. It doesn't occur at any particular time and happens whether I am standing, sitting or lying down. At first I thought it was because my bladder was full, but that's not the case at all. When it happens, it lasts for a few seconds to a few minutes at a time and goes off and on for about an hour or so. I just want it to go away! What are you doing for the pain?

The only thing I found was from 33 weeks on saying that when the cervix starts to dilate, you start experiencing a sharp, stabbing pain in your groin and that the cervix may begin to dilate weeks before labor. I haven't had any more luck finding anything by medical professionals. I found this on Mayo Clinic's site. It also said if you are experiencing Braxton Hicks at the same time as the groin pains, you should call your doctor. I hope you can find some information as well! This is very difficult for anyone to have to deal with!!!

Ijust recently started the feel the same thing and I'm almost 30 weeks. The only difference is that I only feel it when I've been sitting for a long time or when I get out of bed to go the bathroom (so basically, every hour on the hour at night!) and when I get up in the morning! This morning was the worst! I think I freaked out my husband with the pain noise I made when I tried to get up. I had to stay still for a moment to make it go away! It's good to know that I'm not the only feeling this way...I wonder why we are all feeling it, but at different weeks....

When I asked my Dr. a few weeks ago about this he told me it was round ligament pain. Especialy if it is located in the pelvic area and inner groin area. I thought it might be that pelvic disorder that some women get where the pelvic bone grinds aginst the hip, but that can only be diagnosed with an x-ray.... and he was sceptical. Mine never goes away.... it is always there as a dull ache in the pelvic area....but you never know, someone elses pain could be more serious, call your Dr. right away if your pain is real bad or heart stopping, don't feel like a fool for calling at any time.... its their job, after all, to listen to you and help you understand whats happening with your body! (My older sister told me that and shes a nurse.)

Katie --

Thankfully the pains subsided today, but they were still there (just not as frequently as yesterday). I spoke with one of my girlfriends who has two young children and she said she experienced that off and on from around the beginning of her last trimester. Thankfully it's not accompanied by abdomen pain. Thanks for posting your response on what you found with the Mayo Clinic site.... I can only describe the pain as inner-groin pressure feeling like it was moving out. But again, no bleeding, nothing out of the ordinary, no abdominal pain, and it's not frequent enough. However, I too will experience it in all positions (walking, standing, sitting, laying down). Sometimes it's super painful, others it's mildly discomforting. If they get worse or become more frequent in the near future, I will be contacting my doctor.

Thanks again... oh, and wanted to share... we don't know what we are having, but we've decided that if it's a girl, her name will be Katherine but we'll call her Katie.

Congratulations! I really wanted a girl, but with my luck I wound up with two boys! Have you guys picked out a middle name? We are going with Jayden Alexander for our little guy. When is your due date?

I love the name Jayden! The middle name we've chosen to go with Katherine "Katie" is Nicole. We are still stuck on a list of 4 or five boy names. Baby is due November 1st. Congratulations on your second baby boy! My sister has two boys, nearly 3 years apart, and they are SO much fun (they are 5 and 8 now).

That's awesome! Katherine Nicole is really cute. What boys names do you have picked out? I went with Kieran ( pronounced Keer-ran)for my first boy. I like good ol irish names, but my husband decided to pick the name this time. Are you going to find out the sex of the baby or leave it a surprise? Congrats to you though! Is this your first baby?
