So thirsty | 10/1/09 10:11 AM
I can't seem to get enough water or enough liquid to quench my thirst...has anyone else been having that problem? I know it is good to drink a lot of water which I am but sometimes I just want to drink something other than water and every time I do I am even more thirsty and it takes so long to feel like I am getting enough water afterwards...any suggestions?

I've gone through phases where I was extremely thirsty, then it would pass. In fact, I think I remember being really thirsty around 13 weeks too and told my Dr. about it. His reaction surprised me, he just asked if I was thirsty or forcing myself to drink some number of glasses of water per day. His point was that your body will tell you what's right.

Around 13 weeks, or the beginning of your 2nd trimester, there is a huge hormonal adjustment from when the hormones start to be regulated by the placenta (or it could be the other way around, I forgot - just google it, there's a definate shift in your hormones at the beginning of the 2nd trimester)

Definately tell your dr about this and call the dr office if you're retaining a lot of water or having extreme fatigue several weeks into your 2nd trimester.

I don't remember exactly where I read up on the hormone shift at the beginning of the second trimester. (I've read SO MUCH stuff I have a hard time remembering) but here is some info on the placenta.

http://www.pregnancy-info.net/about_placentas.html

I just remember that the reason why the risk of miscarriage is less after 13 weeks has to do with the placenta and that it's not totally developed until after 13 weeks. Before it's completely matured there's a lot that can go wrong. After 13 weeks the placenta has a big job to do - it's one tough organ. It's also why nausea is less starting in the second trimester.

I just remember that I could sense a shift in the hormones. It was very clear to me that something was different - suddenly less nausea, suddenly less boob pain, suddenly more energy. But also I had really bad headaches for the first few weeks of my 2nd trimester and my skin was breaking out pretty bad. Then it all cleared up after a week or two.

I felt like I was dying of thirst for most of my 1st trimester and into my 2nd. It has staved off quite a bit lately, but somedays I still end up chugging a glass or two of water. In fact, a few weeks ago, we were at the grocery store picking up a few things to cook out at a friend's. I was suddenly struck with thirst so bad that I thought I would have a complete meltdown if I din't get something to drink, stat! So I grabbed the first thing on the shelf (Apple Snapple) and drank the entire bottle in one sip. My BF turned around and saw the empty bottle with these big wide eyes. I just laughed and said, "Told you I was thirsty!" LOL. BF then reported to the checkout lady that his 'pregnant girlfriend' couldn't wait until it was paid for. All I could do was shrug. I felt truly pregnant at that moment!

Anyway, I really just wanted to leave a tip, since you've already gotten some useful info! I recommend popsicles when you feel like if you drink anymore, you'll float (I hated drinking so much that I felt I was peeing every 10 minutes.. and sometimes I was). I also always carry mints or gum or hard candy to suck on. Sometimes I find I'm not so much thirsty but just suffering from cotton chops.

Good luck!

I just found out I have gestational diabetes. The Doc stated that is why i've been so thirsty and urinating so often. How far along are you?

I am 13 weeks. I had a doctors appointment on Wednesday and I asked my doctor about it and she said it was normal. Since my body is producing so much extra blood my body needs all the extra water.
How far along do you have to be to be diagnosed with GD?

I'm the same way! I have to drink water and it ALWAYS hits me right before I'm gonna go to bed .. It's very interesting to know that it's because of all of the extra blood.

I have been going through this as well and I am in my first trimester. I actually talked to a doctor and pharmisist, and they said that drinking water all the time can actually make you dehydrated as well because you aren't getting the electrolytes that your body needs. They recomended Pedialite as well as water to regenerate your body. I have been trying this and it seems to be working. I live in New Mexico and it is very dry here so I still end up thirsty. I hope this helps.

Everyday your body gets rid of the baby's amniotic fluid and replenishes it. If you aren't drinking your recommended 64 oz a day, you may be slightly dehydrated...so drink up!
