Spina Bifida trouble | 5/27/09 4:33 AM
Hi I will be 18 weeks tomorrow and i just got a call from my genetics counselor saying that i have a 1-30 percent chance of my baby being born with spina bifida. I dont know what to think they want me to comeo in for test and ultrasound. I just want to know has anyone else ever been told this and they are fine.

Was told at 16 weeks that I had high HCG levels and my baby could be Downs? They sent me to a specialist and ultrasound showed no other signs of downs but I still had a chance of downs and the only way to really tell was by amnio. I chose no amnio because of miscarriage risks? Now I've got 9 weeks left and still don't know for sure? Alot of these test they do are to cover their butts! Liability? I suggest the amnio if you would opt to not carry out full term if the baby had spina bifida. I chose not to because if my baby had downs I could deal with it but if you think spina bifida would be too much for you then I would get the amnio? My whole pregnancy has been one big worry! They thought I had gestational diabetes cause I failed the in office test, they sent me for a 3 hour glucose test and after getting stuck 6 times and 1 blown vein,OUCH, They said I wasn't so all of that worrying because the only joy in life I had left was sweets and then I was OK! I'm not a holy roller or anything but I guess the best advise I can give is LET GO AND LET GOD! Eat right and don't obsess beacuse some things you just have no control over!

Beacause that is such a rare and detrimental birth defect, If it were me I'd accept every and all tests that they suggested. Do some research on what Spina Bifida is and write down any questions you have for your doctor. IT always makes me feel better to feel like I am on in the "inside" of a scary conversation rather than on the outside. The very best of luck to you!

That is a scary thing to hear. I've been blessed, and so far everything looks good. I do have a close friend whose son was diagnosed with spina bifida in utero. Two things to perhaps ease your mind a teeeny bit: when they do a detailed ultrasound, if your baby does have spina bifida, it is something that is often caught during the ultrasound. ( or at least that's what my doctor told me when talking about doing an amnio ) and the second, if it is indeed spina bifida, if caught soon enough, they may be able to go in and close up the hole as much as possible, which will help with future development.
My thoughts are with you during this time.

Sure, probably nothing to worry about. I definitely wouldn't worry too much, because it will just be added stress on your baby. I was told the first time I was pregnant that my baby had a high chance of downs syndrome. The triple screen test came out positive for it, they did the amnio and it came out negative, but he still showed markers in the following ultrasounds for downs. He was born at 35 weeks, due to other problems with the placenta, but he is very healthy now at 3 years old! Just follow what your doctor says, and try not to stress too much. Good luck to you and your bundle of joy!

I am 18weeks pregnant with twins they say one of my twins has spina bifida. They found it on the u/s although the blood test came out negative. I am scheduled for an MRI on the 10th to see how severe the spina bifida is.I hope everything is okay for you.

Issac James was born July 15th with no birth defects despite the test results. Lots of false positives so why test?

My Dr has approached me with doing early testing for Birth Defects. I just don't know if knowing would be better or not. I am a little stressed now just trying to make up my mind to do the testing or not. She said if I'm not prepared to do an Amnio, then she wouldn't recommend doing the test for Downs, but there are things that can be doing during my pregnancy for Spina Bifida, but do I want to know? I don't want to stay stressed through the rest of my pregnancy. Either way I will have the baby, I am 4 1/2 mos along now.

Worried!!!
