Trans-Vaginal Ultrasound | 9/10/09 11:14 AM
Hi Everyone,
I just went for my first prenatal doctors visit yesterday and well it wasn't at all what I expected. I had a vaginal exam and got lots of blood taken... I didn't have to fill out any paperwork what so ever, I wasn't asked any questions about family history, if I had cats and what medications I might be using. The only thing I was asked was if I'm feeling sick and if I have sore breasts. I was surprised, but then I realized that they did take ALOT of blood and they could find everything they need to know in that. Anyways while my doctor was doing the exam and he was feeling my uterus he said it felt really big to be just 8 weeks, so he wants to do a vaginal ultrasound. When I called to schedule the appointment they said they would do both because a first trimester ultrasound is routine, wellll a tranvaginal ultrasound ISN'T??? I'm just worried that something could be wrong, maybe something he felt.. but wouldn't he have said something right then and there? Please tell me I'm just being insane and if any of you had this done what were the reasons? Thanks for reading and replying!

A trans vaginal ultrasound is totally normal for your first tri.....if he didnt know how far along you were and they did a regular ultrasound the baby may be to small to see that is why they do the transvaginal i think that is what you are asking your question wasnt to clear...... but the fact that they didnt ask you anything was kinda weird but they didnt do that at my first appt. they asked all the questions at the second appointment

If he made a comment about your uterus feeling too big for 8 weeks chances are he's thinking you're further along than that or you may be having multiples? And I agree with the previous post--the baby is too small at 8 weeks to be seen clearly at 8 weeks.

They need to do vaginal ultrasounds until the 2nd trimester. At 12 weeks the baby is finally big enough to see. Don't worry. If they had a real concern, they would tell you what they think may be the problem and run the tests.

Oh I just love the vaginal u/s! (not really) esp when they make you stick it in yourself! Yes the other women are right, usually with the regular doppler they can't see the baby that early on a reg u/s. It doesn't hurt...just weird! Your uterus may be bigger b/c you are further along than you think or you may have more than just one bambino in there! Good luck!!!

When I first found out I was pregnant I was at the hospital and I did a trans vaginal ultrasound I wasn't expeciting that but my mom who is a nurse assured me it was ok and normal. I didn't get to see munchkin my mom did, I didn't get to munckin until week 13 and my mom was with me. Munchkin was small but too cute finger by the mouth and head back.

I had one at the beginning as well, and it seemed like they had to do it so that they could be able to get a clearer pic. when early in pregnancy it is harder to do a regular ultrasound, i am pretty sure. it is only natural to worry but try not to stress yourself out too much. good luck and try to be confident that all is well

At the ER.. I had male techs and they both asked for me to insert it.. Out of the girl techs, no one has ever asked, but they do have to see where it needs to go in. I think the males were just trying to be nice respect the privacy.
