Triple Screen - shows me @ high risk for Trisomy... | 3/5/08 3:47 PM
I took the triple screen test. I am 36. We got pregnant by IVF. The doctor called yesterday and told me that I am a 1 in 25 risk for trisomy 18. The normal risk is 1 in 6,000. I spent yesterday researching the triple screen and have learned that 90% of women who recieve an abnormal screen, have a perfectly healthy baby. Why did I take this test? I wasn't properly counseled on this test. The doctor even told me (yesterday) that he didn't like this test. Now I am freaked out. I have a level 2 ultrasound in two weeks. Has anyone else been through this?

Is there any way you can have them move up the ultrasound? It seems as if they at least owe you that for not helping you know what you were up against. At least then you don't have to spend the next two weeks worrying.

I'm sure everything will be fine, but know how hard it is not to worry! Easier said than done, I know!

Good luck and hang in there!

Last year I was told I was high risk for spina bifida and trisomy 21. I had to go thru 2 weeks of living hell until I could get my level 2 ultrasound. They have certain markers that they are looking for and can tell right away if your baby looks like he/she has it. Once I had the ultrasound they told me I didnt show any of the markers, and I gave birth the the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen, she'll be 1 yr old next week Since they didnt see the markers I declined to have the amniocentesis, but had to go back for a 4 chamber heart scan just as a routine procedure.

I tried to get them to move up the US, but they won't budge because the baby will be better developed @ 18 weeks and they don't want to miss a marker (hopefully there won't be one). I just wish they hadn't called me so so soon with my results. Initially I was supposed to call on March 14 for my results. One week would have been better than two. Thanks for your response!

Thanks for writing. I have already had 3 ultrasounds because we conceived by IVF. I can' tell what I am looking @, but I would think that my fertility doctor would have indicated if he had seen a developmental problem. I did call him and told me that IVF patients do have a lower than normal level of estriol. I am hopeful and optismistic!
