I am brand new to the Cradle. I absolutley love this website.

My husband and I both are very excited about the thought of having our first child. However, I would like to loose some wieght before we really start to try. I have been doing a lot of reading and think that it would just be best for conception, pregnancy, labor and life in general. Is anyone else trying to lose weight before they TTC?

We did the same thing and I actually lost about 25 pounds before we tried last year. We got pregnant pretty quickly and then I lost the baby at 7 weeks. Well, I was so depressed and in such a bad funk (is that even a real word?) that I basically operated on a "If I can't have a baby, I deserve an extra piece of cake at least" mentality and gained about 10 pounds back. I talked to my doctor and he told me that ideally I would be within 10 pounds of my suggested weight according to those charts but that I wasn't so overweight that it would be a problem. Well, what do you know but we conceived and I am now 22 weeks pregnant. The really ironic part to all of this is that I have been so sick during this pregnancy that I am actually about 12 pounds lighter today than I was when this child was conceived and it turns out that it was almost a good thing that I had an extra "hump" (as my doc so lovingly put it!) for this child to live off of. He is growing and is very healthy and I consider myself to be so blessed. I am probably the exception to every rule out there and again, I agree that it is better to start as close to your ideal weight as possible, but it isn't something that you should require of yourself before starting on this wild and crazy journey to motherhood (unless doc says otherwise!) I wish you the very best of luck!!

I've read/heard that women should not take drastic measures if planning on conceiving soon. If you're a year away, then it's ok, but don't go crazy at the gym and try conceiving the next month. Your hormones fluctuate too much with those type of changes.
Good luck!!

I'm actually not trying to conceive just yet (will be going off birth control this September), but I decided in May 2008 that I wanted lose weight before getting pregnant. So far I've lost about 38 pounds (from 177 to 139)...my recommendation is calorie counting (I used thedailyplate.com). I agree with the earlier poster that you shouldn't do it too close to trying to conceive because it certainly messed up my cycle even though I'm on the pill. I have about 4 more pounds that I'd like to lose, but it's not really a big deal. Now I'm just focusing on getting in shape and getting the house ready before getting pregnant. :-) Good luck with the weight loss!

Your focus should be to get healthy, but maybe that's just my personal opinion. Losing weight is great but it can also mess with your hormones like a previous poster mentioned.

Maybe start with baby steps, track your food intake at The Daily Plate via Livestrong.com (I'm an addict to that thing! I find it fascinating). Invest in something like Wii Fit and aim to do at least 30 minutes a day, constantly mixing up what you're doing. Eat healthy, whole foods, that come from the earth not a chemist lab. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein.

I personally have yo-yo'd (because of health issues both cancer and an auto immune disease) back and forth from being my regular healthy weight of 135 to 250, all the way down to 98. The best advice I can give you is to not be hard on yourself, to take baby steps, take it slowly, find a program that works for you and stick with it. Maybe join a fit club or a group?

My best girl friends and I have have a FITClub, and it's mostly just keeping each other on track. Not about how many lbs we lose, but about how we feel, what we put into our bodies, and how we take time every day to make our bodies feel better.

It took me about 3 years to lose all of the weight I had gained with my first child. When my husband and I talked about having another baby, I could not even think of the idea being overweight!! I knew I was going to gain weight (obviously) during pregnancy, but I was determined to lose. It took us about 10 months to conceive, but I am now 20 weeks pregnant and doing great!! I could not imagine gaining more weight on top of what I had gained with my first child! I am really glad I chose to lose the weight. This pregnancy has gone 10 times better than the first, and I truly believe it's because I am not overweight. So, Good Luck! And I think you are making the right choice!

We actually were surprised by our little one, and, as weird as it sounds, I've lost weight during my pregnancy. Much to my doctor's approval. My eating habits changed so much that I was becoming more and more healthy throughout the pregnancy. I feel awesome. I'm 5 weeks away from my due date, and still am just above where I was before I got pregnant.
Iplan on working my BUTT off once the baby comes, just so that I can keep up with him.
I just wanted to say congrats to everyone for getting the weight off before you plan on your little creepy crawlers. :0)
