Tummy Sleeping | 4/23/09 6:47 AM
I will be 14 weeks tomorrow, I am not showing too much but my pants are snug. I find myself waking up almost every night flat on my stomach, arms stretched above my head. When I lay down for the night, I try to lay on my left side with a pillow under my belly and one between my legs. I have been doing this for about a week and a half now... I am trying to get used to this as I have heard this is the preferable way to sleep during prenancy. But I just can't seem to stay that way and always go back to my tummy. I don't want to hurt the baby... Does anyone know if sleeping on your stomach during your early days is harmful? Does anyone have suggestions on how I can stop doing this? I know eventually I won't be able to sleep that way at all, but I would like to stop it now!

I have the same problem, but I wake up on my back. My doctor confirmed that I should be sleeping on my side, but not to be alarmed if I wake up on my back. I find that if I have my boy behind me to lean against I sleep much better.

As long as it's still comfortable (which is sounds like it obviously is) there is no reason you can't sleep on your stomach. You aren't intentionally falling asleep on your stomach so you're doing the right thing. This won't hurt the baby; same as when you wake up and you're on your back. You just naturally end up there and that's where you're comfortable. There will be a point in time in which you won't even be able to get to your tummy, so be thankful for these times now!

I had the same problem, however when you do start to get bigger, you'll find it very uncomfortable to sleep on your tummy. it gets easier to sleep on your side the bigger you get, like the previous post I found it helped having my husband to lay up against. Another trick that I use is a body pillow tucked under one side of my back to keep me tilted to the side.

I'm a tummy sleeper when I'm not pregnant, and did not hold back from sleeping that way as long as it was comfortable. It did not do any harm to my baby. Your body will let you know when it's making your baby uncomfortable because you will feel uncomfortable too! Enjoy your tummy sleeping while you can, I'm guessing you only have about 4 more weeks of it!

Hi guys found this. Nothing to worry about im 25weeks and still sleep on my tummy, well as much as it will let me but find throwing my right leg over a pillow helps with comfort.

Russell Turk, obstetrician

While sleeping on your side (especially the left side) is most commonly recommended, you can also sleep safely on your stomach. The issue of sleep safety during pregnancy generally focuses on optimal blood flow and nutrient supply to the placenta and the fetus. A main concern is the weight of your enlarging uterus pushing down directly on the large veins that return blood to your heart. The most notable effects occur when women lie flat on their back. If you experience such problems as shortness of breath or heartburn, especially in the third trimester, propping yourself up with pillows may be helpful. Remember: Comfort is important, too!

I was the same way for a while but now that I am 21 weeks, showing, and feeling baby I can't really sleep any way but on my side. I have a body pillow and that seems to help. I occasionally wake up on my back, but from my understanding your body will wake you up when you are sleeping on your back if it is causing problems. The reason you shouldn't sleep on your back is because as your uterus grows and becomes heavier is can compress the major vessels in your abdomen and cut off oxygen supply.

I was exactly where you ladies are (I had my baby at the end of June). Its ok to sleep on your tummy until you are no longer comfortable. You are not hurting your baby as he/she is well cushioned. Remember when you get into your 2nd trimester its important to sleep on your sides, especially your left. Good luck to you all on your pregnancies.

I was the same way when I was in the early stages of my pregnancy. I was so afraid that I was going ot hurt the baby by being on my tummy. I found that as I got bigger and I started to show that I stoped laying on my tummy. It's almost like your body knows what to do. You may want to try a boppy body pillow. I loved mine and it helped me sleep more comfortably on my side throughout the rest of my pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck.
