ULTRASOUND IN 3RD TRIMESTER? | 4/17/09 2:03 PM
Just curious as to how many of you that are in the 3rd trimester have had a recent ultrasound or have a future ultrasound scheduled. I am 32 weeks and haven't had an ultrasound since 19 weeks and it is driving me nuts! I asked at my last OB visit if I would be having another one and they told me no They said as long as I was measuring okay that there wasn't a need for it. With my last baby, I had several ultrasounds throughout the pregnancy, so I don't know why my doctor this time is being so stingy about it! I want to know that the baby is in the right position and get an estimated size and just have some peace of mind...UGH!

I just had my 18 week sono on Monday. While I was there, they said that I wouldn't have another until around 34 or 36 weeks. The only way I would have more than that would be if there was a problem. I don't like the idea of waiting that long until my next one. I want to see her! (Of course I don't want there to be a problem, either!)

ugh! I know exactly what you mean!! I had my 2 ultrasounds, one to determine my due date at 8wks and the second was at 21wks. I have not had one since then and I'm now 35weeks along. I had numerous ultrasounds while I was pregnant with my boys. The other thing is I would really like to make sure that this one is a girl! I have all boys and so i'm a little nervous just to go off and buy all pinks when i was told to "keep my reciept" when they told us the sex lol. Hopefully I will get to have one soon, and I hope for you as well. It's always easier and less stressful at the end of your pregnancy to know that every thing is going swell!

That's weird. I remember having several with my last two kids...and there were no complications or scares. Just routine ultrasounds I guess. I'm only at 28wks with this pregnancy, I've had two early on, and then one at 20wks for the gender, and I expect to have more in the 30s somewhere. (Or I'll be really disappointed)

Hang in there. With my first child they told me I wouldn't have another ultrasound at 21 weeks and they weren't able to see the gender but by some crazy reason they needed to look again because they missed one thing they were suppose to check.- so we were able to have that ultrasound that was not suppose to happen.

My doctor said the same thing. My first ultrasound was at 18 weeks, she said I wouldn't be having anymore ultrasounds unless there was a problem. As of now I'm measuring fine and haven't had any complications. I know how you're feeling I'm so anxious to see what my baby looks like. It might have something to do with insurance, if your pregnancy is high risk and if you're unsure about how far along you are.

Thank you for your responses! I guess it completely depends on your doctor on whether or not you have one in the 3rd trimester. Since it's too late to switch docs now, I guess I will just have to deal with the suspense until I deliver

Or I guess I could pay $150 to go and get a 3D, but I don't really know how much those tell you...

I am on my third pregnancy and this is the first time I have had more than one ultrasound. If your doctor is not concerned about the baby being breech then I think it is pretty unusual to do one later. The only reason why I had two this time is that I miscarried and got pregnant immediately after and they wanted to check early to make sure the baby was growing right and that I was correct about the due date.

I am unlike many of you. I have had the opportunity to see my baby girl every time I have had a Dr. appointment. I had some problems early on in the pregnancy and my doc is a high-risk doc so I get to see her every visit. This is my first so it has been amazing to see her grow every step. I am sorry that you want to see your baby and your doctor is not giving you that opportunity. I am sure all is well with the baby.

Hello- I am a sonographer who is also pregnant. It is typical for many people to have the first, early, ultrasound to verify gestational age & make sure baby is not ectopic. The one you had between 19-22 weeks is typically the last one you get. It is the morphology ultrasound that makes sure everything is okay and baby has all parts & pieces . This will typically be your last one, and they don't always see gender if baby does not comply. If they can't see gender...they will not typically schedule another to see it as gender is not required by the doctor...usually only desired by the parents. If any are scheduled for later, it is usually because of complications, absence of doppler heart tones at OB exam, or to monitor size if you have gestational diabetes. Hope this helps If you want another peek you may have to go to a 'recreational ultrasound' place that you pay for pics.

We have a school near our house that trains ultrasonographers. They need practice, so pregnant women can go in and be scanned as many times as they want for free. My husband and I found out about it around the time I was 24 weeks. We went to them twice and it was so nice to see our baby girl and all the changes she went through during that time. It's something to look into if anyone has a school like that near you.

I feel your frustration! I had my last ultrasound at 18 weeks and haven't had one since. My doc told me he would do another at 35 weeks, but I didn't want to wait so my husband and I did the 3D at 24 weeks. It was fun to do and really interesting to see, but it has nothing to do with checking for medical problems. They were very up front about the 3D not being a medical procedure -- I guess that's why the insurance doesn't pay for it AND that it's pretty expensive!
I was told by the doc that they don't do any more ultrasounds if everything is fine. They will only do them if you are having a high risk pregnancy. SO...it's great that everything is going great, but it sucks that you don't know -- I feel your pain since I'm in the same situation! Good luck with everything!!!

Whether it's necessary or not, it is certainly comforting to get a peek at your little one every so often. My last was at 18 weeks, and I'm now 30 wks. I have one more scheduled next week at 31 weeks. I am considered high risk though, so that's probably why I'm having a 3rd trimester one. So excited to see my little man!

I had one at 18 weeks, and my doc said I would have another towards the end of the pragnancy. I'm going next weekend for a 4D sono, though, outside of the dr. With my first pregnancy (different dr. than I have now), I only had the one around 20 weeks at the dr. office. I did have a 4D sono with that one, though. The dr. said as long as I was measuring fine and didn't seem to have other problems, that I didn't need one at the end. I think it depends on the dr., and also what your insurance covers. It's hard to wait, b/c you want to see your baby! THat's why I like the 4D sonos...plus they're so much better quality!!

What does it cost to have the 4D sono?

I would just request one. If your OB office tells you it will cost extra, do research on local diagnostic center fees. It'd be worth it! I get ultrasounds every 4-5 weeks and would hate it if I couldn't check the progress out!
