I'm in my second pregnancy and this time around I've been drinking wine every once in a while. And dare I say, I've even had soft cheeses... I can't resist it. Next stop, the hot tub. Just kidding. I'll at least stay away from that.

I've been eating the hot dogs and lunch meats that the doctor said not to... oops!

I too have had the occasional glass of wine and I have also had lunch meats and hot dogs. I think people are WAY too paranoid about those things. Let's face it, if wine and cheese was that bad, would there be anyone in France who DIDN'T have birth defects?

My doc told me that all if it is pretty much okay in moderation. Well... no fish because of the mercury, but other than that. My first pregnancy I was a SAINT. Nothing but what was on the A list passed my lips! I gained nearly 40 pounds and retained Lake Michigan.

This time; I have coffee once a week, I eat french fries when I want them, and I've had hot dogs too! And - drum roll, please - I've only gained 13 pounds thus far. Yay me!

Yep, I would say everything in moderation. A glass of wine now and then is no biggie - unless your "glass" happens to be a 4z. Big Gulp, then that might not be so good... I'm not worrying about what I eat, if I can keep it down then I'm eating it! I had a few Twizzlers the other day (4 actually) and one of my guy friends (whose wife is also preggers) told be I should NEVER eat candy while pregnant - the way he reacted you would have thought I had a bottle of whiskey or something! My response was, "huh, very interesting, pass me another Twizzler." ;-)

Lol That's a great point! I just wonder how often those things cause a problem that they feel they have to warn us about them, but not other things.

Obviously, there's the fear or fetal alcohol syndrome (if you're downing cases of wine a week) and the worry about bacteria (from raw foods, cheeses, etc.). But look at the French! They're not all giving up their wine. Same with the Japanese...I'm sure they're not all abstaining from sushi!

This is my first pregnancy. So far everything is going great. (knock on wood) Our doctor is really low key with the restrictions on sushi and wine etc... But there are other people that get really bent out of shape when I tell them that I'm having a glass of wine or a diet coke or sushi. My mom reminds me that she drank martini's and smoked everyday through all four of her pregnancies and we turned out just fine. The only time it worries me is just before the ultrasound. Then I panic and wonder... am I killing my baby? But then I see the little peanut moving around like crazy and growing bigger every time. So I guess a little wine isn't doing any harm. My doctor actually told me that in my 3d trimester I could have a glass every night and he wouldn't care. But I'm not so sure about that.

HI I just had to reply to your post on Cradle. My twin sister sent me this link (she has 3 children and I am pregnant with my first due in Sept.) and I read your post about the wine and the Twizzlers and I laughed out loud when you said "pass me another Twizzler!" I loved your response and attitude.

And not just the French! All of the European countries...in Italy, they buy their foods fresh everyday so nothing is pasturized, or refrigerated...they all drink wine and eat cheese and go about their normal daily routines. And they are happier pregnant people, and I have not heard anything reporting astronomical rates of birth defects at all!!! I think we have just come to a sad point in our society where we need to be able to place blame on someone, or something, for anything that may go wrong with us, or our children. I'm in no way saying we all need to down a "box-O-wine" every night, because that is an obvious problem. But a small glass every now and then, a nice warmer than warm bath every now and then to soothe our aching bodies (cuz you can't take anything for it!), or the occasional brie cheese...common people!! Leave us preggo people alone and worry about what YOU could be doing differently in YOUR life

I am so sick of the Pregnancy Police telling me not to eat this and that... especially since most of them are men! Almost everything I put in my mouth is scrutinized at work... don't ya'll have something better to do? And where were ya'll when I couldn't eat ANYTHING and LOST 20 lbs for the first half of my pregnancy?! Certainly not bringing me ginger tea.... so can I please eat my cheez doodles in peace?

That's why as soon as I get home, I eat whatever I want. Now, I haven't had wine or soft cheese (I'm waiting until month 8 for that delicious riesling I have in the fridge), I have indulged in sushi. Like once a week. And I usually feel better after eating that than anything else. Other no-nos... regular ol' caffeinated tea. oooh and pastrami (but I at least heat it up first...)

sorry if I sound defensive but you would not believe how ridiculous these people at work are. They swear up and down I'm going to have pre eclampsia (my blood pressure is perfectly normal, thank you!) and gestational diabetes (aced the screening with flying colors).

I can't stand people commenting on what I eat and drink. I've actually been pretty good, too. I can't stand the hot dog restriction... The weather's getting nice, I'm having cook outs, and I'm eatig them... And my other vice is diet pepsi. I don't drink a whole lot of it, but I can't do the caffeine free stuff... As the school year's coming to an end and my 2nd graders are getting crazier, I need a small boost of caffeine to make it through the rest of the day. Maybe I'll stop that during summer vacation... but probably not!

My husband works for a winery in the Napa Valley so we have some great wines to sample. If he really likes one I will go ahead and take a sip. I think it is true that women in America are a little too uptight and paranoid. The Europeans are still producing healthy babies.
