During my first pregnancy, I had 4 ultrasounds, but there were no concerns for my baby's health. With this pregnancy I've had 3.
However, my sister-in-law had to have 6 with her last baby. During the anatomy ultrasound, they found what they thought might be a problem with the baby's heart. They sent her to a children's hospital about 2 hours away from here for 2 more echo scans of the heart. The first showed that the baby had something called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which is the left side of the heart is significantly smaller than the right. The second one showed up "normal" and he was allowed to be born in our local hospital. Unfortunately, the disorder was still there and he had to be rushed to the children's hospital under some serious ventilation. Because it took so long for the doctors to figure out what the problem was, his lungs were damaged as well. He was too sick to do surgery to correct his condition until his lungs healed. Sadly, he only lived for 2 weeks.
My point is that the doctors wouldn't do something that they know will hurt your unborn baby. If they think that there could even be a little bit of an issue, please go ahead and have the ultrasounds done. It is better to have the scans done now rather than having to deal with bigger issues in the future.
