how many ultrasounds have you had? | 1/6/09 1:37 PM
hi. i had an ultrasound that showed my baby's brain ventricles were on the large side of normal, but STILL in the normal range. so, my doc wanted me to do an amnio- which i did, and he is fine....now she wants to do a follow up ultrasound to look at the brain, which i understand, but she also wants me to do another ultrasound for the heart (a cardio echo sonogram) this will total 7 ultrasounds. i know they say they are safe, but i've read some things about too many ultrasounds. how many is the normal range for ultrasounds? how many ultrasounds have you ladies had? I don't know any pregnant women in my city, so it would be great to hear anything that you've gone through. thank you!

During my first pregnancy, I had 4 ultrasounds, but there were no concerns for my baby's health. With this pregnancy I've had 3.

However, my sister-in-law had to have 6 with her last baby. During the anatomy ultrasound, they found what they thought might be a problem with the baby's heart. They sent her to a children's hospital about 2 hours away from here for 2 more echo scans of the heart. The first showed that the baby had something called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which is the left side of the heart is significantly smaller than the right. The second one showed up "normal" and he was allowed to be born in our local hospital. Unfortunately, the disorder was still there and he had to be rushed to the children's hospital under some serious ventilation. Because it took so long for the doctors to figure out what the problem was, his lungs were damaged as well. He was too sick to do surgery to correct his condition until his lungs healed. Sadly, he only lived for 2 weeks.

My point is that the doctors wouldn't do something that they know will hurt your unborn baby. If they think that there could even be a little bit of an issue, please go ahead and have the ultrasounds done. It is better to have the scans done now rather than having to deal with bigger issues in the future.

I have already had about 5 ultrasounds and I am about 3 and a half months along. I had some problems early on with my pregancy and the Dr. thought I was going to loose my baby. Thankfully everything is going well and the baby is growing right on schedule. I think if they are concerned about the baby the more ultrasounds they do will give you a piece of mind when your baby comes.

I've had two and I'm at 24 weeks, the first was because they couldn't get the heartbeat with the doppler and the second was the routine 20 week ultrasound. They're not planning on doing anymore that I know of.

i have had 4 and i am only in my 9th week. one on my 1st visit to make sure it was implanted. one a week later b.c i was bleeding and they wanted to make sure the embryo was in tact. one on my visit a 8wks and then one three days later b.c i was bleeding again. since it is only an embryo they use a wan which is inserted vaginally. i haven't had one on my stomach yet b.c it is too early. from what i understand from my friends they had an ultra sound at every 4wk visit. i totally trust my dr. i don't think he would do anything that was not necessary.

My doctor has two ultrasounds on the schedule for me. I had one at 12 1/2 weeks to review progress and check for heart health, signs of down syndrome or other issues. Fortunately, everything came back normal! It was so fascinating to watch, the baby just rolls and sucks it's thumb all day. My next scheduled appt is at 20 weeks. Can't wait!

So far at 22 weeks I have had 5ultrasounds and will be getting one a month up until our baby is here, i have high blood pressure so they want to do size checks on the baby to make sure she is growing. We are also getting a 3D ultrasound done so that will be a total of 11 ultrasounds this pregnancy.
