the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine | 8/11/09 7:29 AM
Is anyone thinking about getting the H1N1 vaccine? I've done some research on it and know the government would like all us pregnant women to get it this fall, but I don't think I'm willing to be a governmental guinea pig for an untested new vaccine... Thoughts?

The swine flu isn't anything new in the medical world. The last time they dealt with it was in 1976. The flu killed 1. The vaccination killed 25. I've talked with my OB about it and she said this flu affects those whose immune systems are already very weak. It's also affecting those with upper respiratory health issues such as asthma.

I work for a bible camp and over the past 9 weeks I have been dealing with the H1N1 virus among my staff and among the campers. From what I've seen it's more of a stronger common cold than the flu. I've had staff and heard of campers who have gotten over it within 3 to 5 days. The common flu lasts longer than that. I've seen this virus go through people from age 7 all the way up to 21 this summer and no one has been hospitalized for it and my staff are back to work for me within the week.

If you are concerned because you know you have existing health problems I would talk to your Dr about precautions you can take like using hand sanitizer or just washing your hands or if Tamaflu is safe for you to take in case you do get the flu but I wouldn't recommend the vaccine.

Just my opinion. Blessings of good health to you all!

Im kind of afraid to get the vaccine. Im afraid i would get it from the vaccine. My family tends to get the flu from the flu shot so i don't think i will be getting the swine flu shot

I dont know where you are from but I am in temple, I work in the lab that tests for H1N1 out of 1,000 cases 600 and something have been confirmed positive, they are treating it like that of the flu for now but they ask you stay off work for a week, you might just want to talk to your dr. and see, but they didn't say anything to me about getting it and I gave birth in July, they just said to wash my hands a lot , and if someone is sick around me for me to wear a mask or make them.. so I just played it by ear!

I don't want to get the vaccine. I usually get the flu vaccine every year, but I'm very leery about trying a new vaccine, especially while pregnant. I'm just going to take extra precautions and wash my hands a lot, and steer clear of sick people. I haven't talked to my doctor yet, but even if she recommends it, I won't get it since it's so new.

I'm not getting it... when the government was so fast to put the swine flu vaccine out in the 70's, it caused way more harm than help.. no thanks, I don't want to get sick and possibly die.. I'll go with washing my hands and steering clear of sick people.

If it is any help at all...try going to WebMD.com and looking up swine flu or H1N1 there. I found it to be very helpful as well.

At our first teacher inservice this year, they were talking about how hard the swine flu is going to be hitting the schools. Our school nurse is also pregnant and she said that swine flu is expected to kill as many people as the "typical" flu. So she doesn't seem to be too worried. I personally would rather not be vaccinated for fear that it could be worse.

My husband is being treated for H1N1 right now. It has been a trying week. He has been very sick and isolated in the bedroom. The CDC is strongly recommending that all pregnant women get the vaccine, not to use you as a guinea pig, but bc the effects of the treatment for H1N1, a drug called Tamiflu (which will not protect you but decrease the severity), is totally unknown in pregnacy. My OB prescribed me Tamiflu prophylactically and we have decided since I am not sick, I am not taking it. We accept the responsibilty of that decision and have been as diligent as possible to keep him isolated.

The concern with H1N1 and pregnancy is a longer duration of illness and an increased severity of symptoms. The cases of hospitalization are higher than average in children, young adults and pregnant women than any other influenza pandemic yet.

All of the same healthy living techniques will work against this, eating right, washing hands frequently, getting enough sleep etc...the concern is the number of people that are sick that are not being responsible enough to stay home from school or work, especially in the first 24 hours because it doesn't feel flu like to them.

I am considering the vaccine this fall and will do more research about it, but I know that the emotion and stress this week and wondering if I will wake up sick each morning has been more than I can handle for the next 14 weeks.

this swine flu epidemic is really confusing. i am not sure it is safe to get the shot and want to only do the best for the health and safety of my family. My 4 month old had a cold recently but seems better now so i will keep a close eye on him and stay home more often. My doc recommends it but i am sure he is supposed to support it. who knows best really? moms and dads do their very best and thats all we can do. also, my breast milk supply diminished 2 months ago and now i am trying to get it back using dom peridone, no luck so far. i hear breast milk keeps babies from getting sick, anybody know if there is truth to that?
