to have a bassinet or not? | 7/13/09 5:43 PM
I keep getting mixed signals from my friends who have had babies about a bassinet. Some say it is needed while others say don't worry about it and use a the pack and play or swing since the baby grows out of it so fast. Please help and someone give some direction about getting or not getting a bassinet! Thanks!!!!

I had the same debate. Bassinets are smaller than the pack'n'play so we decided to get one but if we had the space we would have used the pack'n'play instead. I picked one up that would last the longest for the least amount of money, used through craigslist.com. I spent a total of $65 and got a bassinet for my room and a travel bassinet so I don't have to carry the pack'n'play while the baby is little. With my daughter, I bought a used cradle that comes out of the base so when she could start rolling over we took it out of the base and put it on the floor. We used it until she was about 6 mos old. Anyway, good luck!

We're just getting a Pack n Play. Not getting a bassinet is one less thing to spend money on and store later.

I am going to have a c-section, because of this I like the height of the bassinet and the fact that it doesn't take up much room next to our bed. The baby will be in our room for the first 1-2 weeks until my stomach muscles are working again and I have an easier time getting out of bed. We also have a pack and play that was handed down to us, I thought about simply using this but having to bend down in to pick up the baby would put alot of pressure on my incision.

I have seen some really cute pack and plays with bassinet that can attach. I would love the convenience of both in one, so that's something to think about too.

I had a bassinet with my first two children and they were nice, but they grew out of them very quickly. I used the same one for both of my sons, so I didn't feel like I wasted my money. This time around, I'm getting the pack and play with the bassinet attached to it. I think I would get more of my money's worth rather than buying anohter bassinet.

We actually got both at our shower. The bassinet I plan on having in our room since it takes up little space and the play yard in our family room since it's much bigger. But if I was to pick between the two I would go with the play yard. Good luck.

We used one with my first son, and we will with our 2nd. I didn't really think much about it at first, but it's my husband's family tradition that every new baby use the same bassinet (kind of neat...it's something that all the grandkids and great-grandkids have used), so I didn't really have a choice. I'm so glad I had it though! Since I breastfed, it was so much easier to have him by my bed the first few months while he was eating throughout the night. I kept the bassinet by my bedside, which I couldn't have done with a playpen b/c of size. It was also much easier to move around the house than a playpen, since the stand is on wheels. A playpen would have worked just fine, but I'm glad we had the bassinet! We did also have a playpen with the bassinet attatchment that we used while traveling, which was (and still is) very wonderful!

That's how I feel! It's funny how everyone has an opinion and needs to let you know of it! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate knowing that someone else feels the same way!

we got a pack n' play... i figured we'd be able to use it for other things not just for the baby to sleep in.

Everyone def has to let you know what to do and what not to do...it is so annoying. I just want to punch them when they say anything about how bad pregnancy is and how bad labor is. FREAKING KNOW IT ALLS! If you want a bassinet just becuase the dang thing is cute...get one! Who cares. If yo uwant it...get it...if you don't use it, give it away!
