weird morning sickness-need suggestions! | 5/19/08 4:43 PM
I sometimes feel sick to my stomach, but not to the point where I have to throw up. But, I basically have this burning acid feeling in my throat and chest. I have never had this before. I feel hungry a lot but only certain foods temporarily relieve this burning sensation. Ugh. Anyone feeling the same way or any suggesions?

Maybe you just have bad heartburn. With all of my pregnancies it was so bad that it made me sick to my stomach. Try some tums first to see if that helps. Good luck.

My doctor told me to try Tums and then when that didn't work Pepcid. I didn't really think this was heartburn but the Pepcid seemed to help. I can't eat anything that is too spicy or have anything that is acidic at all (even no lemons in water!) because it makes it worse. Milk also helped relieve it some but this is something that is VERY treatable according to my doctor so don't suffer needlessly. We'll find somthing that helps!!

My sister-in-law is going through the same thing you are experiencing. Her heartburn has gotten to the point that she was getting so sick that she couldn't hold anything down. She's lost 10 lbs during her pregnancy. The doctor finally decided to give her Tagament, which is usually prescribed for ulcers, but it seems to have done the job. I am sure your doctor will find something that works. Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried the tums and milk/ice cream and those seem to temporarily relieve the burning acid feeling. I actually have found that if I just eat routinely and eat things that are really bland or whatever sounds good I feel a lot better. I haven't had the pain in 2 days!!! I hope I didn't just curse myself!

I had acid reflux or "heartburn" before getting pregnant but it was controlled by diet changes. Now that I'm 12 weeks my morning sickness brought acid reflux back with a vengence! I would actually not suggest a ton of dairy though. Contrary to popular belief, dairy can temorarily sooth (as you mentioned) but it is a complex food to digest so don't got dairy crazy! The basic issue of acid reflux is the overproduction of acid in the stomach. During pregnancy it is usually the result of a slowing of the digestive processes due to hormones and/or organs getting smushed as baby grows! Keep all that in mind and continue to listen to your body as far as foods that you can tolerate. I don't like to take medication for it but I'm about to start on it again because Tums just aren't quite cutting it and I am entering the 2nd trimester where I REALLY need to be able to eat a healthy diet. Good luck!

For the morning sickness I tried those starlight mints, they are the red and white round dinner monts. They were the best things ever. Also for heartburn I was allowed to take Pepcid for all my pregnancies and it is the only thing that helped me. I have had that with each pregnancy. Good luck and congratulations!!!
