pregnancy & parenthood faqs

Are tanners okay to do during pregnancy? Whether it's the do-it-at-home kind or the one in the spa/tanning place (that spray it on people)?

Barbara Dehn, RN MS NP:

Self-tanners are probably safe in pregnancy, but like any exposure, I'd try to avoid any chemicals on the skin in the first trimester and while breastfeeding. If you do go out in the sun during your pregnancy, be sure to wear sunscreen, as the added hormones can make the "pregnancy mask" or melasma worse with sun exposure. Many moms-to-be get darkened areas across their foreheads, cheeks and upper lips, even with light sun exposure.
