Your Baby

Your growing baby!
The placenta grows with the baby, but not as fast. At this point in development, it weighs around 1 ounce (28 g); at the time of birth, it will weigh between 1 and 2 pounds (448-896 g).

Over the next three days, the vocal cords will form in your baby’s larynx, or voice box. The baby will not be able to make sounds, however, or cry out loud, because sound travels through air, not fluid.

[Towards the end of this week] all of your baby’s 20 baby teeth and their sockets [will] have formed in the gums. Over the next three days, the intestines will form into folds and become lined with villi (small, fingerlike projections in the lining of the intestines that absorb certain nutrients).

By [the end of this week], your baby’s vocal cords will have formed in its larynx, or voice box. In another week, the primary ossification centers have appeared in the middle of nearly all the bones of the limbs. Secondary ossification sites develop in the bones of the knee and the ends of the thigh bones and tibias (bones of the lower leg).

Did You Know?
Your baby will be born with 300 bones in its body. As your child grows, some bones will fuse together, to produce a total of 206 bones by adulthood.

You

Just as in the past two months, you will continue to feel more tired than usual. Continue to listen to your body and make adjustments in your schedule so you can rest when you need to.

You may continue to need to urinate frequently. Again, that’s because your system is working more efficiently to remove waste and to circulate nutrients. It’s important to empty your bladder when it feels full. If this is a second pregnancy, your muscles may be less resistant to your growing uterus. Consequently, there’s less pressure right now on your bladder and more baby showing - so you may be wearing maternity clothes already.

For Your Health
Pregnancy makes women more prone to bladder infections, and the longer the urine stays in the bladder, the more likely it is to grow bacteria if such bacteria are present. Drink plenty of fluids to flush out your system; sufficient vitamin C intake and cranberry juice are known to prevent bladder infections.
