Baby Shower Theme:
Eco-Chic
by Jennifer Sbranti
Founder, Hostess with the Mostess

An earth-friendly party doesn’t have to mean “plain” or “boring." Quite the contrary, actually. With all of the “green” and organic products available today, hosting an eco-chic soirée is easier and more fashionable than ever. And since keeping the earth healthy for future generations is the primary objective, what theme could possibly be more fitting for a celebration in honor of baby-to-be?!

Table Settings:

Instead of paper partyware, use as many “real” items as possible – everyday plates, table linens, drinkware, serveware, and utensils. If you don’t own enough of these items to accommodate all of your guests, borrow extras from friends.

Biodegradable plates and utensils are also great alternatives to paper party supplies and look classier and sturdier than their paper and plastic counterparts. Bamboo Veneerware by Bambu Home is made from 100% organically grown bamboo, and biodegrades within 4-6 months of disposal!

Centerpieces:

Instead of cut floral arrangements, opt for potted plants or herbs displayed in wooden, ceramic, or bamboo flowerpots and vases. For an ultra-modern look, check out these sleek Blond Wood Vases and Bamboo Cylinder Vases from jamaligarden.com.

To add a childlike touch to your centerpieces:

  • String an organic pacifier onto raffia ribbon and tie it around the planter for embellishment. Think wooden or terracotta vases.
  • Place natural wooden toys – such as Anamalz or wooden baby blocks – next to the plants. The adorable creatures in the Anamalz family are made from all-natural, polished maple wood and cloth fibers. They also use non-toxic glues and paints.

Party Decor:

Display bunches of green fruits and veggies such as limes or artichokes in decorative bowls, pots, or woven baskets.

Decorate with eco-friendly baby products and gifts, such as:

  • Organic baby clothes: Zoe & Sprout has a great selection of cute & clever organic baby clothes, like these “100% Organic” and “My Stroller is a Hybrid” onesie designs.
  • Organic bibs, burp cloths, receiving blankets, towels, and washcloths. Opt for products with a “natural cotton” look to tie in with the natural feel of the shower theme.

On the Menu
Serve a variety of fresh fare, including different types of salads and muffins featuring organic fruits and vegetables. If possible, use produce from a local farmer’s market.

To cut down on your own prep time, purchase ready-made edibles such as cut sushi rolls, spring rolls, and mini veggie quiches from local markets and restaurants.

For dessert, serve sorbet or green tea ice cream garnished with fresh fruit and an organic cookie. Or if you’re feeling extra ambitious, bake mini fruit tarts!

Drinks:
Offer all-natural or organic bottled sodas & energy drinks. Many of these have great packaging design, such as Shift Organic Energy Drink, IZZE Soda, or Hansen’s Sparkling Green Tea Sleek.

Serve a themed signature drink, such as a homemade fruit spritzer or green tea latte.

Extras:
Use a digital invitation service such as Evite.com or Pingg.com, or print your own invitations on recycled paper.

Ask guests to wrap their gifts in eco-friendly packaging, such as recycled paper bags.

Send guests home with earth-friendly party favors, such as potted herbs, mini lucky bamboo plants, flower seed packets decorated with custom labels, organic loose leaf tea packets, or unique Blooming Baby Plantable Seed Favors that will actually bloom when planted!
