hen you have small space, follow the “less is more” philosophy. Only keep what you need and know what you have. This will create a feeling of openness.
The Biggest Challenge: Furniture
Since one oversized crib can utilize all usable space, take a look at furniture size. Many parents don’t even use the crib for the first two months of their newborn’s life. If you can, hold off on ordering a crib and use a bassinet instead. Bassinets are portable and can be stored next to your bed to help make late-night feedings more convenient.
When selecting furniture, look for space-saving designs such as thin-slatted cribs and vertical storage pieces.
In small spaces, changing tables are not necessary, though you do need a changing station. All that is essential is a foldable changing pad and a basket of supplies. This way, you can set up a portable changing station wherever it’s convenient (i.e., the bed or the floor). You can also use a contour pad, but they take up more space.
Don’t Over-Consume
There are a lot of unnecessary extras that come with children. Decide what is important and only purchase or register for items that you need.
Consider the following:
- Wipe warmers are nice, but they take up counter space.
- Wait to purchase a high chair when your child is able to sit up and eat food (usually around six months).
- Choose just one stroller that meets all of your needs.
- Avoid large swings and exer-saucers. Instead, choose items that store easily and compactly. Stephanie opted for a collapsible swing that sits on a table instead of one that takes up floor space.
Assess and Reassess
It is important to know what you have and take inventory often. Go through closets and drawers so that you can rotate and use what you have. This is also a great chance to thin and donate. Always choose a cause when donating – a friend, family member or shelter. It makes “sharing” more meaningful and less wasteful.
Finally, use your closet wisely. Built-ins or additional shelves maximize storage space. Use bins with clearly marked labels, and store like items together. Short on space does not have to mean short on convenience!
