A Room That Can Grow with Your Child

by Nicole Sassaman

When you’re renovating a room for a child, you want to create a space that will wear well through time. Below are a few fun projects that will grow with your child – and won’t break the bank!

Fun Projects

Use a Canvas
So many times people rush to paint the walls a royal blue or hot pink – only to regret it later. Opting for colors that are more neutral allows you to use accents to create a color theme. White, beige, pastel greens, and yellows are all great color choices that can complement the color accents from pillows, bedding, art, furniture, and curtains.

Painting a Canvas
I love this one because it is easy to change if you get bored of the color or want to change the style of the room. It adds a nice flair of color without making a big commitment.

  • Pick up a canvas at the art store (whatever size suits your space).
  • Choose your accent color. You can buy spray paint or a regular quart of paint and roll it on - or even brush it for more texture.
  • A twist! Use colored plaster if you want your piece to have more dimension.

Adding Words to a Canvas
Words have always held great meaning to me and I love the use of them in my artwork. This project is great because you can use it to express yourself or simply to inspire or move you.

  • First, choose the words you want on your canvas.
  • Go to the hardware store or the art store, and find sticky letters in different fonts.
  • Pick out what you like best, and remember that color doesn’t matter.
  • Choose a canvas that will fit your saying, and suit the space where your piece will live.
  • Use a chalk line or tape to space out your words, and make sure they are straight (unless you’d rather have them crooked or do something else artistic).
  • Stick the letters on your canvas. Once that is done you can paint.
