At the Office:
Third Trimester

by Kim Heyman, LCSW

hat? You have another doctor’s appointment?

If your pregnancy is uncomplicated then you will be seeing your obstetrician once a month for the first eight months or so and then, depending on your MD, you will switch to weekly appointments. If you work, this means that you will be out of the office.

This is not illegal and you should not be ostracized.

It might be helpful to communicate with your boss what the future holds in terms of missing work for appointments. Some obstetrician offices can schedule appointments many months in advance, which would give you the opportunity to notify your employer of all of your upcoming appointments and avoid the dread of asking for the time off every month.

Find out if you can use your paid sick time or vacation time to cover these. Decide if it would work best for you to make your appointments first thing in the morning, at the end of the day, or as an extended lunch break.
