5 Easy Steps to a Healthier Home
Courtesy of Heathly Child Healthy World

s parents and adults, it is our duty to protect and prevent harm to children. By making simple changes to our behavior, the actions we take now will guard the health of children against chemical exposures and toxins so they may grow and develop to their fullest potential.

1. Avoid use of pesticides and insecticides. Recent research shows that many of the chemicals found in pesticides and insecticides are extremely dangerous and can cause severe and long-term illness. Use safer organic pest and weed control alternatives that are available.
2. Use non-toxic or natural household cleaners and products. It is easy to avoid health problems, such as asthma, that can be caused by exposure to chemicals in many commonly used cleaning products. Easy to find, non-toxic cleaning supplies are the best alternative.
3. Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air. Don't use toxic cleaning supplies, paints, synthetic carpets, or home decor products. Ventilate the home by opening up your windows and change your home's air filter in the air conditioning and heating units. The use of an air purifier helps cleanse and sanitize the air.
4. Non-organic and conventionally grown food often contains chemical and pesticide residue. Eating organic food reduces the amount of disease causing pesticides in our bodies. Buy organic dairy, meats, dry goods, fruits, and vegetables.
5. Microwaving and storing food in plastic containers can cause serious health risks. Avoid plastic #'s 3, 6, 7, V in food storage, in children's soft toys, and in "sippy" cups. Instead use reusable containers like glass, ceramic, or stainless steel.

Healthy Child Healthy World (formerly CHEC) is a national, non-profit 501(c) 3 organization headquartered in Los Angeles. As a leader for nearly two decades, HCHW is dedicated to protecting the health and well being of children from harmful environmental exposures. They help millions of parents, educators, health professionals, and the general public take action to create healthy environments and embrace green, non-toxic steps.
